Ohio Overpaid More Than 100,000 Unemployment Claims Last Year

In 2012, unemployed Ohioans collected $2.3 billion in state and federal unemployment compensation. An analysis of unemployment compensation data, however, found out that thousands of claims were over paid.

More 110,000 claims from throughout Ohio last year saw over payments totaling $87.3 million in 2012. The state also recovered $43 million in overpaid funds in 2012.

An official from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said that the overpayment problem began during the recession when the state pushed to deliver timely benefits to tens of thousands of jobless Ohioans. The department said that many of the overpayments are the result of honest mistakes.
