Iconic Former May Co. Building at Parmatown Mall Meets the Wrecking Ball Today

Today marks the beginning of the end for the former May Company building at Parmatown Mall, as a demolition team began its work in dismantling the building, a process that will last about 3 weeks.

Over a hundred people showed up to the parking lot in sub-zero temperatures to witness the event. The 305,000-square-foot building is being demolished as a part of a transition of the Parmatown Mall property into The Shoppes at Parma.

The building first opened in 1960 as a May Co. store, before changing to a Kaufmann's in 1992 and lastly a Macy's in 2006. The building has been vacant as retail space since 2012. It was recently used as a training ground for local fire departments.

The Dick's Sporting Goods store at Parmatown also has a date with the wrecking ball, although it is unclear when that will begin. Once torn down, a new Dick's will be built as a part of the property's $70 million redevelopment project.

Here is video of the start of the project.
