Chuck Knoblauch, a former Major League Baseball player, has been charged with assaulting his common-law wife. He turned himself in and appeared in court on Tuesday. A judge set his bond at $10,000. According to the complaint filed, Knoblauch's wife told police that he hit her in the face and then choked her on Friday at their Houston home.

The incident was witnessed by a family friend, and occurred when the couple were engaged in an argument. She reportedly took his keys and would not let him leave the home. Prosecutors say he was drinking heavily and taking xanax on Friday evening.

The two are currently in the middle of divorcing. His attorney, Dan Cogdell, told the Houston Chronicle that "the incident was a dispute between two divorcing people and said charges should not have been filed."

Knoblauch now faces a charge of assaulting a family member, a third degree felony.

A native of Houston, the former infielder played for the New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, and Kansas City Royals. He was also a four-time All-Star.

Knoblauch's legacy was tarnished, however, when he was included as one of the more than 80 players accused of using performance enhancing drugs in the 2007 Mitchell Report. He later acknowledged using performance enhancers.
