You don't have to assume, unless you were asleep since 2006. Dann replaced Montgomery in that election, the wave of pushing out Republicans that put Brown in the US Senate, Dann, Brunner and Strickland in the executive office.
Unlike a "Republican who would have been repeated over and over," Dann is going to do the correct thing - take responsibility for his behavior, and then submit his resignation.
