Scholastic Yanks Bratz Books

Following heaps of complains from parents, schools, and even psychologists, Scholastic Inc. has made the decision to cease offering Bratz books for sale through their book fairs and clubs. Led by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, parents and teachers successfully lobbied against the Bratz products.

MGA Entertainment Inc.'s Bratz dolls, which are dressed in belly shirts, miniskirts, and high heels, have become so popular amongst young girls that they've spun off a complete line of merchandise.

The Campaign argued that through Scholastic, the Bratz image was being endorsed by schools to children. Initially Scholastic defending their offering of the Bratz books, saying that the books inspired "reluctant readers" and that as a company they were more concerned with "materials that appeal to children where they are, not where we would like them to be." Translation: "They're popular and make us money, which is what we're all about."
