Author Michael Crichton Dies of Cancer at Age 66
Bestselling author Michael Crichton died today after a battle with cancer that he had kept hidden from the public. Crichton was 66.
Crichton, who may be perhaps best known for his novel-turned-movie Jurassic Park and the television show ER, was the author of more than a dozen best-selling novels.
His family posted a statement on his website, describing his battle with cancer as both "courageous and private".
“While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us - and entertained us all while doing so - his family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes.
“He did this with a wry sense of humour that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.”
“Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.
“He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves behind the greatest gifts of a thirst for knowledge, the desire to understand, and the wisdom to use our minds to better our world."
Crichton was born in 1942 in Chicago, but grew up in New York state. He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University, after which he began tutoring at Cambridge University. Then he enrolled at Harvard Medical School and began to secretly write novels using a psuedonym. However, Crichton was outted after "A Case of Need" won the Mystery Writers of America's Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1968. Crichton's books have since sold more than 150 million copies worldwide. Thirteen of his books have been turned into films.
The 6ft 9in author had a turbulent lovelife. He married five times, and was divorced four times. At the time of his death he was married to 45-year-old actress Sherri Alexander. He is survived by his wife, and his daughter Taylor (from his marriage with fourth wife Anne-Marie Martin).
A private funeral will be held, and the family has asked that their privacy be respected.
