Mangini Fired by NY Jets, Lions Dump Marinelli

Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel isn't the only NFL coach who is receiving a pink slip as we enter 2009. The New York Jets and Detroit Lions wasted no time today and dismissed their head coaches. The Jets parted ways with Eric Mangini who led his team to a 9-7 record but stumbled down the stretch and missed the playoffs when it looked like they would win the AFC East. The Lions firing of Rod Marinelli should surprise no one as his squad was a pitiful 0-16 in the 2008 season.

Now that Mangini has been dismissed by the Jets, it wouldn't be too suprsising to hear his name brought up as a possible successor to Crennel. Mangini was an assistant coach under Browns head coach Bill Belichick and has another tie to the area as he is Cleveland Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro is Mangini's brother-in-law.
