Conan O'Brien Hosted "Tonight Show" Was a Success

On Monday night, Conan O'Brien made his debut as the host of "The Tonight Show". Most recently the show was hosted by Jay Leno, who was preceded by Steve Allen, Jack Paar, and Johnny Carson.

In his opening night monologue, Conan quipped:

"I think I've timed this move perfectly. I'm on a last-place network, I moved to a state that's bankrupt and 'The Tonight Show' is sponsored by General Motors."

Previously, O'Brien spent 17 years as the host of "Late Night" on NBC in New York City. His move to the west coast has been in the works for nearly five years now. On the set of "The Tonight Show", O'Brien's first guest was an equally silly comedian - Will Ferrell - who offered him some tips for Los Angeles life.

The musical guest of the evening was Pearl Jam, who debuted a new song off of an upcoming album. Will Ferrell also sang a song in tribute to O'Brien

Pearl Jam was the musical guest, debuting a song off an upcoming album. Ferrell also sang a song in tribute to Conan - "Never Can Say Goodbye." Why sing a goodbye song on his first night on the show?

As Will said:

"Don't get me wrong, I'm pulling for you. But this little thing is a crapshoot at best."
