Yao Ming Speculation Heats Up as He Talks About Possibility of Joining Cavaliers

After Chinese businessman Huang Jianhua purchased a minority stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise last month, the move sparked rumors that Houston Rockets' center Yao Ming might be making the move to Cleveland. Yao has remained mum on the subject - until now.

During an interview with Shanghai TV, Yao said:

"It's still unknown. I've already been with Houston for such a long time, I still have much affection for this team. Moreover, this past season we were very successful, and that let me see some hope.

Regardless of whether its a Chinese boss, or a foreign boss, they're both bosses and a boss is just a boss."

The Cavs have not publicly expressed an interest in Yao, 28, who has a $75 million, five year contract with the Rockets that expires in 2011. A opt-out clause for the last season means that he could opt out after the next NBA playoffs in 2010. According to league rules, if Houston wishes to extend the contract they have the privilege to renew it beyond 2011 this summer. However once Yao decides to get out of the contract in 2010, Houston would have to compete with other teams if they'd like to retain his services in the future.

So far the Rockets haven't shown any signs that they are willing to let him go. But then again, Yao hasn't yet made any definitive commitment to sticking around Houston either, and not outright denying a move to Cleveland will only serve to fuel the speculation.

The lure of a championship is strong, and could be strong enough to pull him away. Speaking of fellow China national team member Sun Yue of the LA Lakers, who snagged a championship this year, Yao said:

"There's a little bit of envy. If I didn't have feel even some jealousy, then I'm afraid that really would make me a little too much of a slacker."

With Yao and James together on one team, the Cavs could very well win the championship that both stars so desire.

I don't see why you say that. Ming is injury plagued with a huge contract meaning that Houston may want to dump him. They may accept Z, draft picks, and a couple other add-ons that would better their team in the future.

The Chinese investor would market LeBron and Yao oversees and make a bundle. If it works, the Cavaliers have a major dynasty with two of the biggest superstars in the NBA. Hell, the trade may save the whole Cleveland by making it the hip place to be for the next 8 years.

yeah! go get yao!

Houston isn't looking to unload salaries and Cleveland has NOTHING of trade value outside of LeBron.

Why does LeBron deserve a championship?

i think its only fair that lebron finally receives a complementary center to help him capture that championship
