What Does the Future Hold for the Cleveland Indians?
Cleveland Indians fans have just gone through the most turbulent month perhaps in franchise history. Over 25% of the team's roster was recently traded, with the biggest blows coming from 2008 Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee and perennial All-Star Victor Martinez being dealt in separate deals earlier this week.
While your initial reaction was probably "I am never following this team anymore" and "I'm never buying another ticket", chances are that you won't follow through on those idle threats. So you now have to look to what the future holds for the Wahoos.
Where does the Tribe go from here? What does their future hold for the 2010 season and beyond as it is apparent that they have given up on the near future? Here is a look at the likely starters and prospects that the team is grooming in their farm system in the next few seasons as they will try to make another run for contention (hopefully sometime before their lease at Progressive Field runs out).
Catcher - The Indians have so many catchers on their 40 man roster that you may be seeing them at the closeout aisle at Marc's soon. Kelly Shoppach is the starter for now but will likely face competition from Carlos Santana (who came over in the Casey Blake trade last season with the Dodgers) starting next spring training. Santana is the future at the position for the franchise and likely the reason the team unloaded Martinez. When he will be full-fledged Major League ready is the only question, but he has produced everywhere he has gone offensively and is currently tearing it up with the Akron Aeros. Martinez is said to have a canon for an arm.
Santana and Shoppach aren't the only catchers on the roster either. The Tribe boasts an eye-popping 5 catchers currently on the 40 man roster. Lou Marson is the newest having come over from the Phillies. Marson was a highly regarded prospect by the team and has had a cup of coffee at the big league level appearing in games with the big league franchise before coming over in the Cliff Lee trade. The Indians move yesterday to the 25 man roster was to bring up Wyatt Toregas who is said to be a strong defensive catcher. Chris Gimenez can also be thrown in the mix as he is a true catcher but can play corner infield and outfield positions as well. Gimenez's future will likely be a role player filling in a variety of different positions and likely will be a fixture on this team because of his versatility.
It's very strange for a team to have 5 players on their 40 man roster who are catchers so if I were Shoppach I wouldn't be house hunting in the Cleveland suburbs, as he will likely be unloaded sometime in the near future. If you are an Indians fan you should hope that his bat wakes up as he would be a valuable commodity as a solid defensive catcher for a team that likes to pay more than minimum wage for their players.
1B - Andy Marte is currently starting first baseman by default. Marte, of course, was a heralded prospect who has fallen on his face so far in his short time in the big leagues. Looking at the future, it would appear that Matt LaPorta would likely be the future at first base for the Tribe, and it was kind of shocking that the Indians gave the nod to Marte to replace the departed Ryan Garko earlier this week.
LaPorta of course was the key to the CC Sabathia trade last season and has been a heavy hitter in the minors but has not yet been tested in the big leagues.
2B - Current starter Luis Valbuena will be the future at second base as long as he continues to progress like he has in the first few months of his big league career. Coming over in an off season trade with the Mariners, the acquisition helps you maintain a little faith in Mark Shapiro and the Indians scouting department for evaluating talent. Jason Donald, a recent addition in the Lee trade, may be in the mix as well but will likely be the replacement for Jamey Carroll as the middle of the infield utility man. Donald can also play shortstop.
SS - The Seattle Mariners franchise must like to keep the Indians stocked with young talented middle infielders. A decade after landing Omar Vizquel from the team, the Indians pulled off a lopsided trade by landing Asdrúbal Cabrera. Cabrera is highlight reel defender and getting better and better each and every day in the batters box. H will be donning a Chief Wahoo cap for a long time to come.
3B - Like him or not, Jhonny Peralta will be the Indians cornerstone at third base for the time being. He is signed to a contract through 2011. Prospect Wes Hodges, a former second round pick in 2006, and the enigmatic Marte are other candidates at the position.
You cannot forget to mention 2008 first rounder Lonnie Chisenhall who has been tearing up A ball in his short stint with the Indians franchise. Reading between the lines of the scouting reports, however, it appears he will probably be moved to first base sometime down the road making LaPorta an outfielder once again if he secures the spot on the other other corner infield position.
DH - Travis Hafner's bloated contract and lack of defense isn't going anywhere soon.
RF - Shin-Soo Choo is another reason that someone in the Seattle organization must love the Indians. The 27 year old native of South Korea is a joy to watch, and the Indians better make a play at locking him up for a long time or they will further alienate an already disgruntled fanbase.
CF - You know him, you love him, and you wish he wouldn't hit in leadoff spot as he would be much more explosive in the 3 or 5 hole.
LF - LaPorta is an option at left field along with Trevor Crowe. Crowe is probably the happiest man in the Indians clubhouse after the trade of Ben Francisco who went to Philly alongside Lee. Crowe will be able to audition for the corner outfield spot and got off to a hot start yesterday whacking three hits and getting across the plate three times in the win. The 25 year old was the 14th overall selection by the Tribe in the 2005 draft. He doesn't have the power you would expect from a corner outfielder but can run, stealing as many as 45 bases in a season in his minor league career.
Michael Brantley, who is only 22, would also seem to be a prospect to move over to center field to play a corner outfield position. Brantley was part of the Sabathia deal with the Brewers last year and is a speedster who scores a runs but doesn't possess much pop.Another player to keep an eye is Jordan Brown. Brown, who also plays first base, is hitting over .330 in Columbus with some decent power numbers. The former 4th round selection will turn 26 this year so time may be running out to make a splash at the big level.
Pitching - Pitching is really how we got to the point that we are in now. Somewhere between 2007-2009 young arms such as Rafael Perez, Jenson Lewis, and Fausto Carmona forgot how to pitch. That left the bullpen with a gaping hole and one of the top starting pitchers in the rotation out of the equation. Jeremy Sowers and Aaron Laffey aren't contributing nearly as much as one would have thought by this time as well. The fact that Jake Westbrook was injured as soon as he signed a huge contract and you have a big a mess. Add a poor a free agent pickup in Kerry Wood to the mix and you have a complete disaster.
So how did the Indians address the problems? The recent trades have yielded 9 pitchers out the 11 players coming over in the deals. Here is what the starting rotation and Indians bullpen may look like next season as things start to take shape.
Starting Rotation: 1) Jake Westbrook - Hopefully the soon to be 32 year old will be able to get back on track from Tommy John surgery. If he is able to, he will likely be the staff's ace. Mark Shapiro hopes that Westbrook, who has started to rehab again after a setback earlier this season, will be able to pitch some innings in the big leagues next month.
2) Fausto Carmona - Carmona is probably the biggest puzzle in the whole Indians system. In 2006, he looked like a future Cy Young candidate until getting the closers job in which he imploded. In 2007, when moved to the starting rotation, he won 19 games and was seen as one of the top young pitchers in the game. 2008 and 2009 Carmona regressed to the point of being sent down to the Minor Leagues. His performance is paramount for the team to be able to head back to the right direction and into contention by 2011 as Shapiro has promised.
3) Carlos Carrasco - The right hand pitcher who came over for Lee was leading the Eastern League (Triple A) in strikeouts at the time of the trade. One scout who looked favorably upon the deal the Indians and Phillies pulled off said that Carrasco will likely have the best stuff in the Indians rotation in 2010. Whether the "stuff" translates into big league victories is the big question.
4) Justin Masterson - Came over in the V-Mart deal. Was already a solid bullpen pitcher and spot starter for the BoSox at the time of the trade. The 24 year old is said to be one pitch (change-up) from becoming a solid starter in the Major Leagues. If he isn't able to develop a third pitch he will likely be a key contributor in the bullpen for years to come. ok. Indians brass has already stated that they foresee Masterson as a pitcher in the starting rotation.
5) You need a left hander on your staff and David Huff has shown some big potential so far in his first season with the Tribe. The former sandwich first round draft pick has won 5 games and at the very least will be a left handed set up man in the Tribe bullpen in the coming seasons.
Fellow Left handers Jeremy Sowers and Aaron Laffey seem to be the names always to be in the mix but haven't lived up to their potential. Anthony Reyes may also be ready by the middle of the next season after undergoing Tommy John surgery to end his 2009 campaign.
Names you will be hearing from will be the likes of Jeanmar Gómez, who threw a perfect game for Akron earlier this season, and Fellow 21 year old right hander Hector Rondon may be in the mix as well as next season progresses.
Bullpen - Long relief you can take a name (the one who finishes second) from the list and insert them in this role.
Short relief - It looks like Tony Sipp will be here to stay as a left hander coming out the pen. Right hander Chris Perez will likely provide quality innings for the Tribe for years to come after being acquired for Marc Derosa a month ago. Hopefully Jensen Lewis and Perez will be able to return to their 2007 form and if they are able to the bullpen can go from a liability to an asset. The closing duties will be done by Kerry Wood unless he pitches well enough by next years trade deadline to have a call come in from a contender to take back a contract that the Indians wish they had back.
Shapiro keeps stating that the Indians could be contenders by 2011. He isn't lying that the Indians do have a great crop of young talent coming up that will be ready soon but they lack a Major League ace. Fausto has the physical skills to develop into an ace but it seems as if something is up with him mentally for him to be a dominant player in the big leagues. The team could be legitimate contenders in a short amount of time if Larry Dolan spends the necessary money at the right time, but as a Tribe fan it's not too hard to be cynical at the thought of that actually coming to fruition.
