Milwaukee Mayor Beaten With Metal Pipe After Leaving State Fair

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was taken to the hospital Saturday evening after he was attacked with a metal pipe as he left the Wisconsin State Fair with his family. He remained hospitalized overnight, and on Sunday was in stable condition.

The Milwaukee Police Department said in a statement that he was alert and talking when he arrived Saturday night. It did not provide any further details, and a spokesperson for the police did not have any additional information.

According to police, Barrett was leaving the state fair Saturday night, when he heard a woman crying out for help. He was in the city of West Allis, which is about six miles west of Milwaukee. He then began calling 911 when the suspect who had been attacking the woman began hitting him with a metal pipe. The suspect then fled the scene.

The woman was not injured and police were still searching for the suspect, who has a criminal arrest record. No further details are yet available.
