Browns QB Answers the Media's Questions at Press Conference

(On if he got a flu shot)- “I do everything possible to try not to get sick, like sleep all day yesterday (joking). No, I didn’t sleep all day. I just got up about 9:00.”
(On how he is going to get the offense going)- “Just keep working. Don’t force anything, just trying to keep making good decisions and make sure the ball goes to the right spot. Continue to grind and prepare and eventually it’s going to pay off.”
(On the receiving corps being new)- “We do have a lot of new guys. It’s going to take time. We continue to work after practice, just keep working, throwing, catching and getting used to each other. The other thing too it, those guys haven’t played. That’s a lot of it. Just being out there playing, catching the ball first, making a move. The game is fast. Those guys made some strides last week I thought, overall.”
(On if he can work on things with Chansi Stuckey in practice or if it has to be an in game thing)- “We are working on it. Making sure he sees things the same way I see it. We are not quiet on that page yet, but we are going to continue to keep working, just watching tape and telling him how I see it, how they play it, how he needs to run the route. Like I said last week, it’s difficult to get on the same page right away with a guy when you’ve had everybody else since the spring. To bring him in two weeks and expect him to gel with the entire unit right away is probably unrealistic, but I think he’s done a good job of picking up the system. He works at it, asking questions. He wants to be good.”
(On an example of where he and Stuckey were not on the same page)- “The first third down of the game. It was man-to-man and I expected him to run an out of it and he kind of hesitated and he said he didn’t feel the guy outside of him, got a clean release. It was a smart thing to do, because he was thinking, ‘That guy’s going to trap. The other guy’s going to come off,’ but I anticipated him running an out. We didn’t connect. Just little things like that that we just need to continue to work and make sure he sees it the same way I see it and he will.”
(On if the media makes too big of a deal about how hard he throws the ball)- “I don’t throw it that hard. Sometimes on intermediate throws it just looks like I am not throwing it hard and it’s coming hard than it looks. It kind of gets on guys a little bit faster, but I think for the most part I’ve been a lot better than in the past. It’s something that I’ve tried to work on and I’m going to, like I said, just keep working at it.”
(On if he has had a problem his whole career with receivers dropping passes)- “We had it a little bit with one guy in college, but for the most part everybody caught it pretty good.”
(On if he gets rattled by drops)- “No, I just keep playing. Honestly, I have just tried to continue to keep not letting one play affect what happened, not affect the play that’s coming up. That’s something I have been working on, just moving on and trying to not compound mistakes and errors. I continue to try to make myself better in that aspect, because I know in the past I probably did let bad plays ruin a series for me or the next series or I was thinking about what had happened before. I think for the most part, in my own mind, I have been pretty good with that.”
(On if you think twice about going to receiver after he has dropped one)- “No and I tell them that. It’s not an issue of them not being able to catch. We do it every day, every week. They have done it in the games. We have had some issues, but they can play. They can all catch the ball well. I just keep giving it to them. I don’t ever, honestly, get down on them. I try to encourage and make sure I let them know that I trust them and that they are going to catch the next one.”
(On if he pressure of third down increases if the team was in the Wild Cat formation the previous two plays)- “Yes and no. I think we have done some good things with the Wild Cat. I think it helps us. We gave it to Josh (Cribbs) on third-and-eight one time and he made a play. As far as coming back in there and being able to make a play, it’s not like I get really out of the rhythm of the game or it’s not like I am standing over there for a whole series. I am still focusing on seeing what they are doing, how they are playing and having the game going in my mind.”
(On receivers feel increased pressure when facing third-and-long situations)- “I hope not. That’s something, obviously, we are working on, is getting into third-and-manageable and staying out of the long yardages where we have had issues in third-and-15 and making third-and-15. ‘Okay, it’s is alright to punt it, let’s not turn it over. Let’s not do anything stupid.’ That comes with me and making sure we get it to the guys and if Mo (Mohamed Massaquoi) breaks a tackle and makes 15, great. If not then we are punting and letting our defense get a stop.”
(On how he works on correcting interceptions)- “I don’t go out there and try to throw picks. I am trying to win the game as the plays come up. After I looked back at it, I probably could have ran. I wouldn’t have got anything but two or three yards on third-and-15, but obviously, throwing it to them isn’t a good thing. We went through all of the plays we thought I could improve on and things I could do better. [There are] about 15 plays through the whole season I wish I could have back, where I would have made a different decision, or could have minimized or could helped us from doing something differently. We are working on it. It’s not going to happen overnight. It’s like I was saying, if we get in third-and-15 let’s not have anything crazy happen, just give our guy a chance to catch it and it’s alright to kick it.”
(On if he is encouraged by the route running)- “Yes, I think on our good plays and our plays when we are successful, the spacing on our stuff is great. Guys are in the right spots. Balls are being caught. The first drive of the second half was a great example of that. Guys are in the right spot, Mo runs a great route, things are ticking. Obviously, we have to have more of those. Robo (Brian Robiskie) and Mo have been in the right spots. They’ve been doing the right things. [If] we just catch a few more balls and protect a little better we will be alright.”
(On if they are too predictable by handing off on first and second down)- “I don’t know exactly what the numbers are honestly. I don’t really probably care to know. We can do better. I think with us not being great on offense right now, let’s trying to get ourselves into third and manageable and convert. If it is a pass on first down, or if it’s a run on first down, whatever is going to keep up ahead of the count, I think that’s the biggest thing. It doesn’t really matter to me.”
(On if his pitch to Jerome Harrison was planned)- “Oh lord no. I just kind of looked to my read and nobody was open. J.C.’s (Jerome Harrison) guy kind of slipped off him and I was going and all of a sudden I just hear, ‘D.A.’ and I was like, ‘Here you go.’ Then I was like, ‘Maybe I’ll block that corner,’ and then all of a sudden he was like ‘zoom.’ ‘Maybe not.’”
(On if the team is still looking for its identity on offense)- “No. I think we all know we can run the ball effectively and we are just trying to improve the passing game. The Wild Cat gives us a little bit of a different look. It gives us some options off of that and Josh is one our better players on this team. Get the ball in his hands and he’s pretty amazing when you can.”
