University of Florida Suspends "Eye Gouger" Brandon Spikes One Half

The University of Florida didn't sent too strong of a message to Brandon Spikes who was caught on film gouging the eye of Georgia running back in Washuan Ealey. Urban Meyer said that the All-American linebacker would have to sit out one half against Vanderbilt for the infraction. Spikes has stated he is sorry for the incident saying:

"I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions. I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey," he said in a statement. "Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions."

Here is the play in question. Do you think the punishment fits or was he let off to easily?

Brandon Spikes

Eye gouging should be considered a special crime and grounds for permaanent suspension from football. A eye injury could very well end a player's career. Ask Mr. Teebow how he would feel if he lost and eye and could never make millions in the NFL because of it.

Spikes

What does Spikes mistake have to do ANYTHING with Tebow......question why he has to be discussed?

They should of have

They should of have suspended him till at least the Bowl game. If the PAC-10 can suspend a guy for punching a guy (who was provoking someone) the SEC should step in and do something about this NOW.

Spikes

If he had hurt the other player, I would say throw the book at him.
Lets remember 2 things here. He's a young man, and it was a huge miscalulation to do what he did. I don't suppose when it was done to him, you felt the 15 yard penalty was sufficient, right? That's what I thought....
Revenge isn't a good reason for what he did. I'm just saying, let the punishment fit the crime, for all offenders. Other guys did it too...and Tebow didn't lie about that.
Looks like Blount is coming back to the Ducks too...there's some serious waffling there too. That make it okay??

No worries. Tim Tebow can

No worries. Tim Tebow can heal the blind.

WTF is Urban Meyer thinking?

WTF is Urban Meyer thinking? Like they need him against Vandy anyway and now everyone will be up-in-arms against this "non-supension/suspension" -- WOW!

I am sure he is worried

I saw the gouge clearly during the play and during the replay. Where were the referees? Why didn't the tv commentators make a statement about it? It is obvious, it is according to who you are as to what the punishment will be. I lost all respect for Spikes and for the Florida Gators. Urban Meyer had a chance to really make a statement and he did not.

I’m not a lawyer, but were he not wearing a football uniform what Brandon Spikes did would most likely be misdemeanor assault, punishable by imprisonment. But maybe that’s the most significant issue. The fact that he does wear a University of Florida uniform means that the usual rules do not apply, right? Win at any cost? Too much money at stake?

The degradation of integrity and responsibility is PATHETIC!!!!

Brandon Spikes

Come on Tim. I am not a Gator fan but I was a Tebow fan until I read your comment. You had a chance to make a difference and you blew it. Surely your faith does not lead you to believe that two wrongs make a right. It doesn't make any difference whether or not Georgia was doing the same thing, it was wrong for them and wrong for the Gators. Man, you missed a chance.

Dirty

just another dirty florida football player, they have played dirty football all year and continue to. pathetic that they say georgia was doing it so we was just getting them back. If you watch a pile up in any florida game this year you will see dirty stuff going on almost every time

Spikes

The sad thing is, if you watch the footage, he didnt even have to look to do what he did. It was an easy natural motion for him. The muscle memory would indicate he has done it many times before. I think its interesting that someone who is called "one of the best players in college football" makes a practice of trying to gouge other players eyes out when he thinks people arent looking. This is no different than trying to break someones knee, or dislocate a shoulder. He is trying to permanently injure other players.

I hope U of Florida's

I hope U of Florida's president will step in and make this right, unless the players there are untouchable. This is serious. Suspended 1/2 of a game, must be a joke.

A friend (pretty reliable

A friend (pretty reliable insider) told me a player on our team said Ealey had spit on Spikes' face the play before and Spikes was attempting to rub the spit back on Ealey's face.
I tend to think this might be true because in Ealey's postgame interview posted below, he just mentioned how him and Spikes were jawing at each other all game. Had Spikes attempted to gouge his eyes, you would have thought he would have mentioned it.

Brandon Spikes

I am appalled as much by the slap on the wrist as by the incredibly vicious behavior of Brandon Spikes and greatly disappointed in Tebow's condoning remarks. I used to respect Tebow. I have lost all respect for the Gators, including Tebow. The Gators are a disgrace to college football.

Charges should be pressed.

Charges should be pressed.

Florida Gougers

Instead of the Florida Gators they should be called the Florida Gougers.
Brandon Spikes needs to be suspended indefinitely and seek help from a doctor.
