Majority of Republicans Believe Obama Didn't Actually Win the 2008 Election

GOP Base Believes ACORN Helped Him Steal the Election

According to a new national poll from Public Policy Polling, a majority of Republicans do not believe that Barack Obama actually won the 2008 election. Instead, they believe that ACORN stole it.

The poll posed the question, "Do you think that Barack Obama legitimately won the Presidential election last year, or do you think that ACORN stole it for him?" Overall, 62% of Americans believe he won legitimately and 26% believe ACORN stole it.

Amongst Republicans, however, a mere 27% believe that Obama actually won. A 52% majority of Republicans believe that ACORN stole it. 22% were undecided.

In comparision, Independents came in with 72% believing Obama won, 18% believing that ACORN stole the election, and 10% undecided. Democrats came in at 86%, 9% and 4% respectively.

One of the obvious comparisions that could be made here is that many Democrats felt that George W. Bush did not legitimately win the 2000 election. There are, however, some pretty big differences. The first being that Al Gore actually won the popular vote, but lost in a disputed recount process in Florida. In comparison, John McCain lost in 2008 by a 53% to 46% margin.

Those who believe that Obama did not legitimately win the 2008 election would thus also have to believe that ACORN stuffed more than 9.5 million ballots.

Tom Jensen, PPP communications director, says that:

"Belief in the ACORN conspiracy theory is even higher among GOP partisans than the birther one, which only 42% of Republicans expressed agreement with on our national survey in September."

I’m willing to bet that

I’m willing to bet that 99% of that 52% are white, lower middle class with little or no secondary education. President Obama won by 9.5 million popular votes. ACORN was responsible for registering approximately 1.5 million votes, primarily in the inner cities where Obama would have won handily even without those extra votes. That still leaves 8 million votes. Sorry, but this keeps getting dumber and dumber.

Knuckle-draggers strike again. . .¥

Truly amazing -- but these people will believe whatever Hannity (a knuckle-dragging monkey if ever there was one) tells them. Perhaps Sesame Street really does have it right: It's called "Pox News."

rational people are fleeing the GOP

The Republicans have actively wooed the tinfoil-hat brigade, so it's not surprising that, as more and more educated and intelligent people refuse to self-identify as Republicans, the percentage of wingnuts in the party gets larger and larger. I have no sympathy for the so-called "Goldwater" Republicans who still call themselves Republicans. They should have started speaking out long ago, and supporting their fellow (now ex-) Republicans, like John Dean, who were pleading with them to curb the crazies. Too late now.

Those who believe that Obama

Those who believe that Obama did not legitimately win the 2008 election would thus also have to believe that ACORN stuffed more than 9.5 million ballots.
