Roman Polanski Granted Bail by Swiss Court

Roman Polanski's bail offer of $4.5 million has been approved by a Swiss court. He will be kept under house arrest and electronic monitoring at his Swiss chalet, however, the Swiss Justice Ministry says it will keep Polanski in prison until it decides whether or not to appeal his release to the county's supreme court.

Folco Galli, a spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry, the ministry will make its decision "quickly", despite having 10 days to appeal.

Polanski is still considered to be a high flight risk by the Swiss Criminal Court, but said that the new bail offer today was significant enough to offset those concerns.

The decision to grant him bail will also not affect the Swiss government's continuing assessment of whether it should extradite Polanski to the US for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
