New Season of "Scrubs" Kicking Off Tonight Will be Recognizable, But Very Different

The hit ABC dramedy "Scrubs" will kick off its ninth season on air (2nd at ABC) on Tuesday night. After the "old" Scrubs finished No. 123 amongst primetime shows last year, a third of the size of its early audience, creators realized that it was time for some major surgery to revive the faltering show. While it's deadpan humor will remain a staple, there will be some very major changes in the "new" Scrubs airing beginning tonight.

Scrubs version 2.0 opens its new season in a different place with a different premise and a host of new characters. A handful of familiar faces remain, but it's definitely not the original Scrubs we've come to know and love.

The show's new setting has shifted from the hospital to Winston University. Dr. Perry Cox and Chris Turk are teachers there. Intern Denise becomes Cox's aide, and J.D. returns for the first six episodes, also as a teacher, to help ease the transition into the new era of Scrubs.

A number of new medical students are added to the show's mix. There's Lucy (Kerry Bishe), who takes over as the show's narrator. This role was previously filled by J.D. She's described as a neurotic nervous wreck who's also confident and plucky. Drew (Michael Mosley) is another newbie on the set, and is back in med school after spending time in prison. There's also Cole (Dave Franco), who's an arrogant jerk. He describes himself as "Teflon" because his parents are major donors. And there's also Maya (Nicky Whelan), another student with an Aussie accent.

This is clearly a last ditch effort to regain some of Scrubs glory days, but I think it's safe to say that this show has officially jumped the shark. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but such a shake-up never goes over that well, or lasts too long.

I really for the most part

I really for the most part enjoyed the series premier I mean scrubs is one of my all time favorite series and seeing the return was great I hope we get more Elloit scenes too..but I was disappointed that key characters arent making a return to the show...for one and one of the biggest was Carla Turk one of the key roles not being their kinda made the turk scenes seem awkward like the character seemed somewhat empty I mean when the characters of a show for the entire series original length are together married and have a family and then to be taken out of the series with a spouse still on doesn't make sense without no explination....I hope that with enough fan pleas we can get Judy Reyes to make a return if not this season then mid season to return, also another character that's missed was is Jordan Dr. Cox's wife and having that play between then the love hate puns were great...Missing these key characters can be a possible downfall of the show which I hope doesn't happen I really hope they'll return them to the show...

I agree, it will be kinda

I agree, it will be kinda hard not seeing Carla & Jordan or at least an explanation. Then I guess JD won't be back on after the 6..that will seem weird also. Without those character interactions then I really don't think the show will last. "Jordan" is now on "Cougar Town" which I LOVE!! :)

i agree with all of that

i agree with all of that aswell about all the past known characters that used to be on there and the ones those that wont be there will be missed, but most of all with jd not there now that's going to suck, i just hope he comes back. he did do a better job at the nerating and the flash scene to his wild imagination

wow the new season was

wow the new season was terrible. i didnt laugh once. actually i never even came close to laughing.
the old show was amazing and always very funny, but these changes are nothing like it
and the new girl whose voice we hear isnt even slightly funny, she is just awkward in a strange and not funny way
i hope they change it or cancel it

The new season is just a

The new season is just a re-hash of the old characters with NEW actors playing the old roles.
You have Lucy, the Dr. Elliot-copy, narrating the episodes now with her insecurity and flittering about. Drew is a carbon copy of Dr. Cox; the actor even LOOKS like Dr. Cox and has his mannerisms down-pat. Cole is kinda goofy and irresponsible, like J.D., and the intern for Dr. Cox is JUST like his ex-wife, Jordan, and who dates Drew, who is just like Dr. Cox.

I guess they are doing this on purpose to try to re-capture their glory days of Scrubs or could not think of anything new--- but one thing's for sure, it sure is NOT funny.

They should have quit making this show while they were ahead and still in their glory days.

"Scrubs" should be scrubbed.
