Movie Review: Invention of Lying Starring Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner

It is no lie, the Invention of Lying is pretty darn funny and rather thought provoking. Imagine for a moment we lived in a world where there weren't any such things as "little white lies". Now imagine that you find out how to tell lies and no one else can find out that you've lied or question what you say. If you are as cynical as me and laugh at a sad but true statement such as "Honesty is the road to poverty" you are in for a treat.

Gervais, the writer of the film and recent Golden Globes host, stars as Mark Bellison. Bellison is down on his luck and cannont catch a break. He has had a crush on Anna McDoogles (Jennifer Garner) but she feels that she is far too good and pretty for a man who is broke and soon to be unemployed. Then something magically happens to Bellison. He learns to lie and ammasses a fortune and cult-like following who treat him like a god. No matter how much he is loved and no matter rich he becomes, McDoogles cannot seem to bring herself to settling down with a man who is "A bit fat and has a funny little snub nose".

Invention of Lying works because of the cast. Gervais' is the the current king of irreverent humor. I don't even think that Garner had to act because I imagine she exactly like that in real life. The combination proves to be a winner.

This movie isn't for everyone but if you like dry humor and enjoy Gervais' work you will want to find the nearest Red Box or Blockbuster and rent this movie for some good laughs.
