Former Congressman Tom Tancredo Says Obama Won Because There is No Literacy Test Before Voting

Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) was the opening speaker at the first National Tea Party Convention on Wednesday evening, and what he said is likely to not only raise eyebrows but also anger many Americans. He called President Barack Obama a "committed Socialist idealogue" who was elected because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote."

Speaking before about 600 delegates of the grassroots movement at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., Tancredo said, "You have launched a counter-revolution."

Insisting upon using Obama's middle name, Hussein, the former congressman also said that he was thankful that Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona lost the presidential election in 2008 because Obama's win had mobilized an uprising.

He continued:

"People who could not even spell the word 'vote' or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House."

Tancredo also had a failed bid for the presidency in 2008, and built a reputation on his vehement opposition to illegal immigrants. The literacy tests of which he spoke about during his speech this week were actually once used in our country's history in South to prevent blacks from voting.

While many regard Tea Party followers as a sort of fringe group, they played a role in getting out the vote for Scott Brown, the Republican who last month took the Massachusetts Senate seat that had been held by Democrat Ted Kennedy for the past four decades. Furthermore, it is believed that they will play an important role for Republicans who seek to gain more seat's in Novembers congressional midterm elections.

The convention ends on Saturday evening with a speech by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Attendees paid $549 for access to two whole days of events at the convention. Some of the sessions planned for Friday included titles such as "Why Christians Must Engage" and "Defending Liberalism Via the Primary Process."

Attendees seemed to be comprised of those who are looking defeat anyone who has been in Congress too long, regardless of their political affiliation, and those who want to get conservative Republicans back in office.

Seems pretty accurate. Anyone with any sense would have seen Obama for the empty suit he has turned out to be.

Non-English speakers are in the majority in some parts of the US. But if they're citiizens and pay taxes they're entitled to vote. Or is the frog-faced Mr Tancredo implying that only white people with Yankee vowels would get a say in his America?

Tom Tancredo is the official Racist, Fascist, Hypocrite, and Obstructionist of the day. Congratulations Tom!

Though any rational person will see people like Tom for the bigoted liars they are, I sort of welcome a "civics test" before a Tom Tancredo is the official Racist, Fascist, Hypocrite, and Obstructionist of the day. Congratulations Tom!

Though any rational person will see people like Tom for the bigoted liars they are, I sort of welcome a "civics test" before anyone is allowed to vote. It would be guaranteed that no Republican would ever win again as all of their votes come from the willfully ignorant who evidently only listen to the Nazi-like propaganda from the comedians at Fox "News."

Republicans are nothing but Fascists pretending to be "patriots." The biggest joke is that the so-called "Tea Baggers" are the biggest fools of all. What they fight FOR is precisely what the original Tea Party fought AGAINST. The original Tea Party in Boston was a response to the Fascist attempts by the British Parliament on behalf of the British East India Tea Company to undermine the economy of the Colonies. Today's Fascist Agenda, led by the Republican Party, is seeking to undermine "the People" and our democracy in favor of Corporate rule.

There WILL be another Revolution soon to take our nation back from the Fascist Republican Party unless they see the unrest for what it is. And for the fools who call themselves the "Tea Party," please bring on a "civics test." Only then will all of us rational true Americans be allowed to vote some sense back into our democracy. nyone is allowed to vote. I guess your rage, rant and name calling is because of a lack of facts? The headline left out the word "civics",I'm sure it was unintentional.Your attack of Republicans shows real courage also. No I am not a Republican,Never have been. What we have in D.C. is one political agenda under the guise of two names. They both accept the "ONE" big money from the same corporations for one agenda. What is said about either party really applies to both. The following quote is applicable in today's congress.Ninety five percent need to voted out of both parties.

In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame,
two is a law firm and three or more is a congress.--John Adams

Fight organized crime: Re-elect no one...

dear whitey u fagot raciest asshole

Common Sense would dictate that if we are required to take a test in order to secure a driver's license, at minimum, we should be required to take a test before being granted the right to vote. This is especially true for those who do not read, write, or speak English, as common sense would also dictate that these people could not, individually, understand a candidate's platform and/or the issues that would support their vote for a particular person.

The mere fact that someone pays taxes should not enable them to vote. A majority of people who do not speak English - if they do pay taxes - not only have monies paid in taxes returned to them, they often are also eligible for a tax credit (in other words, we the taxpayers, pay them!).

The vile and crude language included in some of these posts proves to me that Tom Tancredo hit on a subject that those who would like to turn our country into a clone of the third world countries the legal/illegal aliens left behind would prefer not be exposed. Calling any and every person who respects law and order and the culture of our country a "racist" when they voice their concern about the illegal alien invasion in this country has grown old. It has long been determined that this is the favored retort for those who have no facts to support their argument.

If Tom Tancredo's remarks are considered "racist" then the millions of people who echo his sentiments would also be described as such. These same people, however, recognize how hollow this term has become and, unfortunately, the true victims of racism suffer due to the frequent and inappropriate use of it by those who have nothing but name calling to support their hollow opinions.

The right to vote is constitutionally guaranteed to all American citizens at the age of majority, it is not a driver's license test. Being literate is not a reason to disqualify someone from having the right to participate in selecting who is going to lead them. One can know which candidates have your interests in mind without being Rhodes scholar. It is not for you to say what someone does or does not understand or whether he or she is worthy of the franchise. You harken back to the old racist days, yes, your suggestions are racist hiding behind the thin veneer of rational and reasonable dialogue.

Are you a fool, sir? If I have to pay taxes, I demand the right the vote. What kind of elitist are you who demand that I pay the tax without a say as to who represents me?

Let not confuse the illegal alien issue with that of Tancredo's major faux pax, the topic of this thread. I require that only American citizens vote, and whatever supports that premise is fine. As a rightwinger, the tests that you obviously support, you're hoping can weed out those that vote the progressive line. On the contrary, it is the rightwing that prove the most ignorant when compared with the noble, generally more highly educated left, that are going to be most affected. Are you prepared for that? What you support and suggest is the equivalent of WWIII as to how those who have been marginilized in the past because of such policies are going to react. I hope the press milks this for all its worth making it a PR disaster for conservatives in general and the GOP specifically. I hope that the GOP keeps this pee-party stuff up, it shows the true face of what is benind the movement, the bimbo Sarah Palin and retrograde ideas from her sidekick Tancredo. Lets get it on the tele, so that we all can get a good look.

Since when you need to know a certain language to be allowed to vote? What's the relevance of these affirmations? Once these people pay taxes then they ought to have the same rights like the rest. I doubt they don't want to learn English, they live in an English speaking country after all, they just need to be included in language programs, they need esl tutors and they also need support from the government.
