Thumb Injury Will Keep Shaquille O'Neal Out for a Significant Period of Time

During Thursday nights game against the Boston Celtics, the Cleveland Cavaliers' Shaquille O'Neal injured his thumb. The Cavs are now calling it a "significant injury", and expect him to be out for a considerable period of time.

Shaq will thus not be playing Friday night, and likely not in the immediate future. Anderson Varejao is expected to take his place on the court. Once swelling on O'Neal's thumb subsides, he will see a doctor and get an MRI.

The good news is, the Cavs played one of their best games since the all-star break, trouncing the Celtics 108-88 in front of a national television audience.

Shaq's defense you can't grip a rebound tightly without your thumb. You can be a lot more effective with a broken finger than a thumb.
