Cleveland Named 4th Worst Winter City in the U.S.

A common sight during Cleveland winters.
In the eyes of the national media, Cleveland can only top lists that are the ones most cities would like to be at the bottom of. After being named the one of the most miserable cities, one of the most stressed out cities, and having the most hated team in Major League Baseball, yet another publication has decided to kick Cleveland while it's down. Farmers Almanac has named Cleveland the fourth worst winter weather city in the United States, behind Syracuse, NY; Duluth, MN, and Casper, WY.
Syracuse took the number one spot easily, with winters starting early and lasting late and plenty of snow, extreme cold temperatures and very little sunshine. Daytime temps average in the lower 30s and nighttime lows average in the teens. Temperatures as low as minus 25°F have also been recorded. Snow averages about 120 inches per season.
In second was Duluth, due to their "frigid" winters. The city receives about 80 inches of snow each season, comparatively less than Syracuse, however, it's temperatures are far more cold, more often. By December the average temperature is 22°F, and by January it's just 16°F -- on average. Extreme cold temperatures far below average are often recorded, and are the primary reason Duluth made the Farmers' Almanac's list.
Casper is a friendly white ghost, but it's also a town in Wyoming that's pretty white as well, at least during the winter. Snow is common here and has occurred as early as September and as late as June. 181 days of the year are at or below 32°F, and it ranks amongst the windiest cities in the country.
In fourth place on the list is good ol' Cleveland on the southern shores of Lake Erie. Cleveland has an average season snowfall ranging from 45 to 90 inches (west to east), and an average of five days with subzero temperatures. Localized snow squalls often bury the city's eastern suburbs, with winds blowing across Lake Erie from the west.
Cleveland, however, can take solace in the fact that our neighbor to the north -- Detroit -- also made the worst winter weather list, coming in at No. 5. Frequently found on the "bad lists" around the same rankings as Cleveland, Detroit made this list because of its perpetually gray skies. Two of every three days are overcast, and clear, sunny days occur just about 13 percent of the time. It's also cold and snowy.
