10-Year-Old Ohio Boy Shot Mom in the Head

A 10-year-old Ohio boy has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting his mother in the head.

According to Holmes County juvenile assistant prosecutor Sean Warner, the boy has been charged with one count of murder:

"I can't divulge any statements by witness or the alleged delinquent child. But as charged it does not appear to be accident. There is no indication that there are any other suspects."

Appearing in court Monday afternoon, the 10-year-old issued a denial of the charge. He is currently being held at the Richland County Juvenile detention facility, where he is expected to remain until a suitable less-restrictive placement has been secured, possibly with a relative.

Nathan Fritz, chief deputy sheriff for Holmes County, said that they are trying to understand why the boy allegedly shot his mother. She said:

"We are trying to determine what might have motivated the suspect,"

The boy's 15-year-old sister was at home during the shooting, and reportedly ran out of the house first. She has been placed with a relative.

Police were called to the small rural town of Big Prarie around 6pm on Sunday when the boy allegedly killed his mother, Deborah McVay, 46, with a .22 caliber rifle. Her body was found lying facedown in the livingroom with a single shot to the head.

Don't know yet if this an accident or otherwise. Either way it's a tragedy that could have been avoided. The old radio and (later) TV show "Dragnet" had an episode about this: http://video.filestube.com/watch,c39e2c68c21a671603ea/DRAGNET-A-Gun-For-Christmas.html

she shouldve got him that xbox

Are you really that sick?

You are awful for saying that. This is a serious issue. Someone was killed and the son and daughter will have taumatic pyschological issues for the rest of their lives. If you dont have intelligent comments, please keep your immature comments in your head.

You sir have won the internet

or maybe a PS3 with Black Ops?

I saw that Dragnet episode. It's very instructive - and Jack Webb was NOT known to be a bleeding heart either. I mentioned it in a post two years ago after the Jordan Brown episode. Brown, then 11, was given a rifle for Christmas by his father and now stands accused of killing his commonlaw step mother.

In both cases, the little boys were chubby, bad-tempered, and really what we once described as bratty kids. Both had easy access to deadly weapons in their bedrooms.

I said it in the Brown case and I'll say it here - any woman who permits her child of 10 or 11 to keep an unsecured weapon is a criminal - she is endangering everyone around her. Ditto for any other adult involved - Dads, grandpas, whatever. I said the same thing about the case involving the 8 year old in Arizona accused of the double shooting. Every single adult who stood by while a child with anger issues had open access to a deadly weapon is guilty of murder or suicide.

Yet we punish the children for being children - for lacking self control and lashing out. He likely regretted this episode almost immediately - and he will have to live with it for the rest of his life. He obviously lacked an understanding of permanency.

Let's do more to punish the negligent adults - stricter laws about access and serious prison time for adults who provide unsecured weapons to children. We need to protect all of us -

I was wondering how a kid this age even gets ahold of a gun. & the. bullets, Parents should know better. Because of their lack of parental guidance, kids are now motherless.

Agreed. And where was the sister exactly? Wouldnt she have somewhat of a clue what drove him to shooting his mother?

I understand your plea against letting young children have access to guns. But don't punish the gun for being a gun. I look around everyday and see hundreds of weapons that could take someone's life. All of us have access to kitchen knives, blunt objects, plastic bags, tools, electricity and rope. It is the connection that is taught to children that is the crime. But as a society we see violence as entertainment. So as parents, the difference between the two, should be discussed. And if a child has anger issues or whatever, than precautions should be taken. You wouldn't normally send a child who has asthma out for a week without an inhaler. Than why put a child with "issues" around weapons, or things that teach violence. If mom knew her child had issues, than why allow him to have a gun.

Shoot a lawyer instead, they deserve it

If your going to make such a dispicable comment, atleast have the guts to put your name on it, so when people read this kind of disgusting trash, they will know who you are ( A Sick & Twisted Human being). Anybody that feels this way or even thinks this way should be locked up forever, it's people like this that go get a gun & shoot up a School or Workplace. I bet your Parents are really proud of you, Not.

shut up dumbass, they do deserve it

maybe he was a Razorback fan!

Some of these comments are way out of line and shows how inhumane some people in our society can be. this is not a joking matter. It is not to be made light of. I think those commenting in such a way have mental issues themselves and are more likely than the rest of us to commit a similar crime.....Nuts!

Iwas reading these comments that people are posting on here, and it made me sick, what kind of people are you that you could even find ANYTHING about this to be a Joking matter? This obviously Disturbed Child Killed his Mom, now the other siblings don't have their mom. It 's kids like that & people like the ones leaving those awful comments, that are ruining the world we live in. I am sure that your parents wouldn't find any part of it funny & would beat your butt for even thinking these kind of comments. You really should be ASHAMED of yourselves.

where that little fat bastard is going he'll be getting alot of fire wood. and he deserves it

Actually I take back what I said earlier, you are right Brandon

No Kelly the people that are putting 22. rifles to there parents heads are the one's ruining the world.

thanks for agreeing, i felt bad when i first heard the story but after hearing that it was all over the boy being too lazy to carry in wood. now he will truly hate the meaning of morning wood! haha

@alawyer:

It's been reorted that the mother did not approve of the boy having easy access to guns and that that was another point of contention between her and the child. Id you are trul a lwayer, you should knwo better than to make declarations about others before you are in full possession of the facts.

It's rather disturbing to see how many people are willing to a. blame the victim and/or b. mock the entire incident.

1. the boy is 10yrs old RED FLAG
2. its ohio, everyone has a gun, exspecially rifels, we are a hick state, and you dont know if the parents approved or even knew about the gun.
3. the video game comments are unnecessary
and
4. He is 10yrs old, he can be forgiven...he needs to grow up a little bit and relise what he did..there will be concequences for him..he is growing up motherless, he is to blame for this but that doesnt mean it isnt negative....give him a break, im not saying say ohhh its alright to shoot your mother but i am saying that he is just a kid...

I assure you; Not everyone living in the state of Ohio owns a gun.

5. Kelly TOGTFO!

America is so pro-gun, so why is this any surprise??? Why are the school shootings any surprise?

I think only Afghanistan and Pakistan encourage their kids to have guns more than Americans do

The mother was probably both verbally & physically abusive. (look at her) Not to mention fat & lazy white trash. The real victim is that poor 'effed up lil boy being raised by red necks on welfare in a trailor and now life may or may not get better.... I pray for his little soul :(

The facts are, the parents are separated, the dad gave the boy his guns. The mom didn't approve but every time she tried taking the guns away she and the dad got into another fight. If you read more than one article on a subject you're more likely to find out all the information. But yes they did have a fight about him carrying in firewood.

thats just sad:( kids are so lazy nowa days>

Why charge a ten year old

I say put him in the military he seems to be a good shot

"The boy's 15-year-old sister was at home during the shooting, and reportedly ran out of the house first."

I say the 15yo did it and put the gun in the 10yo's hands

Sara Palin will get blame for this too, watch.. I think you all failed to realize the tragedy here.. Sad!

The mother shouldn't of been so careless to give her son a gun without any supervision, and games could teech a kid its okay to shoot someone, cause like a game, they could come back with 2 more lives. I don't believe it was an accident, but I"m sure he was thinking of what him shooting his mother could really do.

I just want to say that i am sorry that the family had to go threw this sometimes we dont look at the problems that our kids may have and when they start to act out we should get them help right away to figure out what the problem is this is my family and i will miss debroah alot i love you i hope and pray that the boy will eventually tell someone why he done it and what caused him to do it. I am so scared and afraid to sleep at night thinken that i will have nightmares. I want anyone out there that has children please pay close attention to their behavior and get them help right awya so no one else has to go threw the sad things that may come about god bless the family my family and anyone out there that has had a tragedy in there life may god be with you and yours.
