Taxman Loves Cable TV and Phone Service

The Heartland Institute and Beacon Hill Institute conducted research on taxes. What they found out is that cable TV and phone calls are taxed at twice the rate of most other goods and services. Here are the keys to the study:
Taxes and fees on communication services nationally add up to $37 billion a year.
In some cities, taxes and fees on wireline telephone service are higher
Economists estimate the value of services lost due to high taxes and fees on communication services add up to a "deadweight loss" to society of $11.4 billion a year.
