The Most Hated Baby Names in the U.S.
The U.S. Social Security Administration keeps a list of the most popular baby names each year, but figuring out what names the population dislikes is a bit tricker. A new informal survey of the most "hated" names in the U.S. finds that popularity often breeds backlash as those names who quickly rise to popularity also seems to trigger a hate for that name. Some of the most hated "trendy" new names included Madison, Addison, Jayden and Brayden.
The most commonly hated name was Nevaeh, or "heaven" spelled backwards. This name did not exist until the 1990s, but soared in popularity in 2003 when it went from the 150th most common name to the 31st most popular in 2007. In 2009 it remained at 34th most popular.
Laura Wattenberg, author of "The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby", said that:
"Nevaeh in particular seems to stand as this symbol … for what people don't like in modern baby names."
Wattenberg did an informal survey of hated baby names on her blog, The Baby Name Wizard. She also looked at general-interest message boards for conversations about baby names that people dislike, and included just two message boards that were specifically for baby names because those who go on baby name boards tend to know the trends and might skew the results.
Participants skewed female and under the age of 60, and in all, 1,500 names were cited. Wattenberg then looked at the names and calculated which ones came up the most.
Here are the lists of the most hated baby names in the U.S.:
1- Nevaeh ("Heaven" spelled backward, one of the most divisive names.)
2- Destiny (People dislike names that confer a virtue onto a child, many felt associated this name with exotic dancers.)
6- Addison (An example of a masculine named turned feminine, which many people dislike)
7- Gertrude (People said this name is "ugly.")
8- Kaitlyn (For its "made-up" spelling.)
11 - Hope
4- Kaden (rhyming names struck many as overdone)
5- Hunter (Too much like a last name or "too violent.")
7- Bentley (People dislike brand-name names, calling them "trashy")
9- Michael (Too boring, according to some.)
