New Orleans Hornets to be Re-Branded New Orleans Pelicans for 2013-14 NBA Season

Later today, the New Orleans Hornets will announce that they will rebrand themselves as the New Orleans Pelicans for the 2013-2014 NBA season.

Rumors of the name change first began a couple months ago. The name hasn't gone over so well with New Orleans fans, but the Pelican does have a lot of history in the Big Easy. The Pelicans were a successful minor league baseball team for a number of decades, and the pelican is the state bird of Louisiana and is featured on the state flag.

Team owner Tom Benson will reportedly make the official announcement at a press conference on Thursday. He is also expected to explain his rationale for choosing the name Pelicans.

In addition to changing their name, the Hornets/Pelicans will also get new colors. The Pelicans' colors will be red, blue and gold. There have been a lot of complaints about the colors, with a number of fans preferring the purple, green and gold Mardi Gras colors.
