Artist Awarded $29,000 for Arrest After Topless Stroll
After being arrested in 2005 after going topless on a stroll, artist Jill Coccaro was charged with indecent exposure. She was released after being in police custody for 12 hours, and learned that prosecutors weren't going to pursue charges.
Coccaro's attorney filed a civil rights lawsuit based on a 1992 Supreme Court ruling, according to which women have the same right as men to be topless, if men are also allowed to take off their shirts.
The city of New York never admitted to or denied wrongdoing, but nevertheless, they agreed to enter a $29,000 settlement with Coccaro. Looks like she won't be a starving artist for much longer!
