195 Feared Dead in Brazil Plane Crash

A passenger jet at the Congonhas Aiport in Brazil, one of the country's busiest airports, skidded off the runway Tuesday night, barreling into a busy highway, and slamming into a gas station and TAM building. The plane burst into flames, and reports are coming out that 195 have died in the accident. With figures like that, this would be Brazil's deadliest air disaster.

The crash occurred during a heavy downpour of rain. The Congonhas Aiport has been criticized in the past for having too short of runways for large planes to land in rainy weather. Just yesterday, two other planes skidded off the runway, although without such disasterous results. Today, with this accident, it seems that the point may be finally driven home. This is Brazil's second major aviation accident this year.

All 180 people on board the plane are believed to have died. Another 15 non-passenger bodies have been recovered on the ground.

Sao Paulo state Gov. Jose Serra said the hopes of finding any surviving passengers "are practically nil," as the temperature inside the plane reached 1,830 degrees Fahrenheit.

Today, emergency workers have recovered 56 bodies from the plane's wreckage, as well as the TAM airlines Airbus-320's "black box" flight data recorder.
