Bethanie Mattek's Latest Fashion Flop

22-year old American professional tennis player Bethanie Mattek has over the years earned a reputation for her awful fashion sense on the court. Yesterday evening was no exception, as Mattek showed up in a shiny, gold, futuristic-looking get-up for her match.

While she claims her intention is not to distract, but rather to express her style and individuality, her outfit last night did distract at least the fans, who were craning their necks to check out the outfit and were furiously snapping away photos on their digital cameras and cell phones.

Her outfit last night was a metallic gold halter dress that hooked in the back, and features a translucent left side. The dress then tapered off into a pleated skirt, under which she wore spankies with Bebe Sport emblazoned on the rear. Completing the outfit, Mattek wore a matching gold headband.

The outfit was specially designed for Mattek, who met with designers at Bebe to create clothing suitable for her tennis matches that would express her style and favorite cuts. She brought four custom Bebe outfits with her to New York, so as long as she continues to win, we assume she'll start unveiling more of her fashion disasters.

The gold must have brought her luck, however, as Mattek beat out fellow American Madison Brengle in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. She is currently ranked 123 on the WTA tour.

Over the years, Mattek has become known for her flamboyant sense of fashion, appearing in a leopard print dress for the 2004 Open, and a cowboy hat in 2005. At the 2006 Wimbledon match-up, she wore a soccer themed outfit, complete with the knee-high soccer socks and headband.
