Mitchell Heats Up Steroid Investigation: Wants to Talk to 45 Players

George Mitchell's steroid investigation is heating up. The New York Times reported today that MLB wants to talk with 45 current and former big league players in the investigation. Mitchell, a former US Senator from Maine, was hired by Major League Baseball to look into steroid use in March.
New York Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi has already undergone questioning in the Mitchell probe and that looks like it is just the beginning.
The players union is not pleased with this investigation as they have stated it can lead to discipline of players brought into the probe. There was no steroid or performance enhancement testing prior to an agreement with the union (although the agreement was strong-armed by the US Senate who said they would look into lifting the leagues antitrust exemption).
It looks like Mitchell wants to clean up the game, but is it too late?
