The lead, which once looked insurmountable for the Bronx Bombers, is now 4.5 games after the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox tonight. The Yankees, trailing by 5 runs in the 8th inning, scored 6 runs that made the game an 8-7.
Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched into the 6th inning and was in line for the win. The Boston Red Sox bullpen couldn't hold the lead as the game started to unravel with a back to back homeruns by Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano that led to sustained rally that saw Bobby Abreu tying it and A-Rod driving in what would prove to be the game winning run.
Mariano Rivera came in the 9th, and despite letting leadoff man on slammed the door and gave New York Yankee faithful hope that they still may win the AL East.
