Browns Comeback Effort Blocked by Raiders

For a brief second, it looked like Cleveland Browns were off to a 2-1 start for the 2007 season. The Oakland Raiders, using a tactic that worked against them last week with the Denver Broncos, would call a timeout at the last second and make Phil Dawson and the Browns attempt a field goal a second time. The first, that didn't matter, sailed through the goal posts. The second attempt would be blocked.

The Browns started off the game lethargically. Poor throws by Derek Anderson had fans wondering if the Cinderella slipper that he wore last week against the Bengals was a fluke. The defense would do its best to keep the Raiders at a 16-0 lead when it could have been much more lopsided. The tables started to turn when the Browns Joshua Cribbs would provide the first highlight of the game for the brown and orange as he galloped 99 yards to cut the lead to 16-7. That score seemed to revive the Browns as the Cleveland defense would force a fumble and the Browns had a golden opportunity to make it a 16-14 game going into the half. Anderson, however, would miss a wide open receiver and the Browns would settle for a field goal to make the game 16-10.

The second half saw the Browns offensive finally click. The offense put together a 4 play touchdown drive that would saw Anderson connect with Braylon Edwards for a 17 yard score. The Raiders would come right back with a lengthy drive that would end in a touchdown on the 15 play drive. Lamont Jordan would barrel into the end zone for the Raiders. The Oakland drive seemed to take a lot of the Browns defense.

The Cleveland offense didn't do the defense any favors as they managed to get only one first down when the revived the ball back. The Raiders would take advantage of the tired Browns defense and extend their lead to 26-17 lead on a Sebastian Jankowski field goal.

The Browns offense would make things interesting. Derek Anderson would lead a 10 play drive in 4:48 that ended when the quarterback ran a naked bootleg for a score. The score would make it 26-24 but time was an enemy although the Browns had the momentum.

The Raiders offense got the ball back with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter. The Browns defense looked like they had the Oakland offense on the ropes at 3rd and 9 yards but Daunte Culpepper would complete a first down pass to Joey Porter. The Browns defense managed to stop the Raiders offense from converting another first down but the Cleveland offense would only have a 1:04 to work with.

Anderson, looking like an NFL veteran not a 24 year old making his third start, rallied the Browns with a drive. He would complete pass Kellen Winslow and Joe Jurevicius to move the Browns from the Cleveland 9 to the Oakland 35. On a beautifully designed play, with Anderson rolling to the righ, with 11 seconds remaining, he completed a pass to Jurevicius to the Browns 22.

The Browns field goal would be blocked, however, ending their chance at a 2-1 start. Both the Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns stand at 1-2.
