The Dark Side of Fortune Cookies

One of the fun parts of getting Chinese take-out food is the fortune cookies that are packaged with your meal. Although few of us actually believe the so-called "fortunes", they're a good laugh. But now, one of the country's largest producers of fortune cookies, Wonton Food, have begun slipping in some decidedly dark messages.

Next time you crack open a fortune cookie, instead of an upbeat fortune like "Luck is on your side today", you might end up with something much more sinister, such as:

  • "Today is a disastrous day. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em."
  • “It’s over your head now. Time to get some professional help."
  • "Perhaps you’ve been focusing too much on yourself.”
  • “There may be a crisis looming, be ready for it.”
  • “Your luck is just not there. Attend to practical matters today.”

If you're sitting there thinking "What the heck where they thinking?!", you're not alone. According to Wonton Food, they felt it was time to get more up-to-date. Consumers had been requesting more fortune-like fortunes, instead of Chinese sayings, riddles, and other things that had been featured in the cookies as well, so Wonton Food hired a few new writers to come up with some unique new sayings. Judging by the new "fortunes", the new writers took off their rose-colored glasses before penning their latest quips.

Some diners have complained about the fortunes, and others have gone off on a search for a more meaningful explanation. Whatever the goal of these gloomy wisecracks was, Wonton Food has succeeded in one area: they've captured our attention.

Many of the new sayings will be here to stay for awhile, while a couple which have received complaints will soon go into retirement. So next time you reach for that fortune cookie, remember, it's not all good inside.
