Cleveland High School Student Shoots Four, Kills Self

The latest school shooting hits close to home, involving the Cleveland Metropolitian School District, where a 14-year-old student shot and wounded two adults and two students, and then killed himself.

The shooting took place Wednesday afternoon at SuccessTech Academy, a specialized high school that concentrates on math and technology in downtown Cleveland that is a part of the CMSD.

Two men ages 42 and 57, and two male students ages 17 and 14 were amongst those wounded in the shooting. A third student, a 14-year-old girl, was injured after a fall while fleeing the incident.

Located right across the street from the FBI offices in Cleveland, police said SuccessTech Academy had been secured and that the lone suspect had fatally shot himself.

According to students, the shoot was enrolled at the school but did not attend classes today. One student, Doneisha LeVert indicated that the student wasn't very sound of mind: "He's crazy. He threatened to blow up our school. He threatened to stab everybody," she said.

Another student, Ronnell Jackson, 15, said he saw the shooter running down the hall, and just barely escaped getting shot:

"He was about to shoot me, but I got out just in time," he said. "He was aiming at me. I got out just in time," he said.

Students began to take cover after an announcement was made that a "code blue" was in progress. The gunman in today's incident is believed to have been upset at being suspended from school.

School was immediately suspended for the remainder of the day, and schools in the CMSD will also be closed on Thursday. A regularly scheduled Professional Day on Friday will also keep students out of school. Counselors will be on hand for students.

The shooting incident today is just the latest in a string of school shootings in recent years in the U.S., where drills to prepare students for incidents like this have become commonplace. The the worst school-related shooting incident in modern U.S. history occurred this past April at Virginia Tech where a student killed 32 students and staff members, and them himself.
