Dennis Kucinich to Launch New Constitutional Convention Initiative Tonight

Dennis Kucinich, a Democratic Presidential candidate and current Congressional Representative for Ohio's 10th district, is launching a New Constitutional Convention Initiative this evening (Wednesday, November 14th), at 9pm EST. Kucinich will be holding a national town hall meeting at kucinichtv.com, featuring live streaming video and audio.

This national town hall meeting will allow Kucinich to introduce his new initiative to the nation. Each week, the New Constitutional Convention Initiative will hold a national conference call for the next ten weeks, which will end with a major event in January.

The goal of the New Constitutional Convention Initiative is to accomplish these three outcomes:

1. Outline the ongoing assaults on the Constitution
2. An educational component / civics lesson to clarify the intent of the framers and provide a foundation for understanding the ongoing assaults on the Constitution
3. Discuss in detail what can be done collectively and individually to restore crucial constitutional principles
4. Provide a venue which will lead to a coordinated and sustained national effort to renew the Constitution and restore accountability in government

Within the next week, a complete list of dates, panel participants, moderators and tops for each will be made available.

Tune in tonight at 9pm on www.kucinichtv.com to learn more about the U.S. Constitution, it's history how it's been attacked, and what you can do to protect it.

Kucinich seems confused

One would hope that Congressman Kucinich knows about Article V in the Constitution and the option specified for a convention. He should come out in support of having the nation's first Article V convention; this is the mission of Friends of the Article V Convention at www.foavc.org - a nonpartisan national group.
Kucinich could and should become the first presidential candidate supporting the nation's first Article V convention.
For over 200 years Congress has refused to obey the Constitution and give us a convention, even though the one and only requirement specified in Article V has more than been satisfied!

Only 1 Legitimate Constitutional Convention

Agreed Joel. It seems many groups and individuals are under the impression that they can convene a Constitutional Convention OUTSIDE the framework/authorization of the Constitution.

On the subject of an Article V Convention

Only yesterday I said that I supported Kucinich for President. Now this story has made me re-think that support.

Let me be clear. I support an Article V Convention ( http://foavc.org ) which would allow the States to propose amendments and ratify them without the approval of Congress or the President.

In particular, I support initiative, referenda and recall at the national and state levels as a democratic right of the people. If we had this now we could remove Bush and Cheney ourselves and bypass a corrupt and inept Congress.

But Kucinich is not supporting an Article V Convention as far as I can tell in this story.

Kucinich is trying to acquire the political power of a "Constitutional Convention" without ACTUALLY calling for one. That's timid and ineffective leadership in my opinion.

Joel Hirschorn ( above ) claims that the Congress has refused to obey the Constitution for over 200 years. I think this is false. In any case, it's a matter of interpretation ( done by Congress ) and the facts are not in evidence as far as I know.

I have repeatedly attempted to acquire the actual "applications" from the States for a Convention. But this has not been easy and as far as I know nobody has actually acquired them.

Please contact me if you are in the Washington DC area and are willing to pursue the matter. It will require a physical visit to the National Archives and spending a considerable amount of time with a contact I have there.

The bottom line is that these documents (applications from the States for an Article V Convention ) have been hidden from public view. The method used has been "obscurity through categorization." There is no straightforward manner in effect for indexing these documents so that they can be easily retrieved from the archive.
