Robert Hawkins, 19, Named as Shooter in Omaha Mall Shooting

19 year old Robert Hawkins has been named as the shooter in Omaha, Nebraska, mall where he killed 8 people and later shot himself. Hawkins had been in trouble with the law just last month on two misdemeanor counts.
His mother stated that Hawkins gave her a note before leaving for the Westroads Mall that "could be interpreted as suicidal." In the note, Hawkins wrote he wanted to "go out in style" and was "going to go out and be famous".
Jennifer Kramer, a witness who talked to Omaha television station KETV, said she heard 35-40 shots fired and "hoped God would spare them".
No motive has been given for the shooting.

Robbie used to go to my school, he was the kid that everyone was scared of, he wore chains everyday. he offfered my cousin drugs one time and even though he dropped out, kids still remember him really well. knowing that he went to school with us and then a year later this happens, all i can say is that all of this is a little to close for comfort
Robert Hawkins Victim or what?
Robert Hawkins - an ensuing mixture of street urchin, innocent victim, naïve teen lover, cute cuddly adolescent, seeker of fame, filled with promise and talent, eliciting a “Note from his Mother” - Can you excuse Robert today, he’s mentally ill; achieves Media Splash headline event - Omaha killing spree! Was George Bush coincidentally in Omaha, searching for "Reasons of Mass Causation?"
(A sprinkling of intellect - a dose of stupidity - seasoned with soured levity - surreally sautéed in the festering salty brine of conventional "Commercial" wisdom! = A Prime Time entertainment cook-off, second only to TMZ!) who's really to blame?

Omaha shooting
This boy lived in a group home, was depressed, and talked about killing people - yet he had a gun?
Maybe this will change some attitudes about gun control. Disturbed people don't kill - guns do.
Diane Gordon
No Diane, Guns don't kill
No Diane,
Guns don't kill people, it's the psychotic people behind them that do. Maybe if someone in the store had a concealed weapon permit and carried a firearm, then that person could have stopped him.
Yep
I agree with you. Cops don't do there jobs anymore to protect us because most of the time they're scared. I work close to the city and need to carry a gun due to the crack heads but then again if I carry a gun and protect myself I'd go to jail just like if there was a person to shoot the kid blowing everyone away.
Guns kill people?
Excuse me Diane,
I agree, if this young man was depressed then no one should have allowed him access to a firearm. That said, even if the government outlaws firearms, criminals and people like this young man will still find a way to get a firearm to carry out their mischief. Also, if you outlaw firearms for law abiding citizens you would make every criminals job much easier.
Ex. An armed thief is walking down the street in a U.S. with all firearms outlawed. He thinks to himself, "I don't see any law enforcement around I think I'll rob your sister or my brother or Billy's dad or Susy's mom or Tom's grandmother at gunpoint and if they resist I might shoot them. If I get caught I'll plead insanity or say emotional distress caused me to do it and get away with a couple of years in a psych ward."
Now that same thief is walking down that same street in a U.S. that allows properly trained, law-abiding citizens the right to carry a concealed firearm for personal protection. He now thinks to himself, "I would really like to rob someone to get some easy money, however I don't know if they are also carrying a gun. What if the person beside me is carrying one? What if I get shot? Maybe I won't rob anyone today."
This said, yes I am for limited gun control, no assault rifles, sawed off shotguns and other firearms that have no legitimate role in society. I am not for a total firearm ban. I believe, if a person is trained on how to properly store, care for, handle and use firearms then there is no reason why he or she should not be allowed to own and carry a firearm. Although allowing people to carry firearms will not stop crime it may deter some criminals.
As to your last comment Diane, I have been around firearms my entire life and of all the times I have been around them never once have I seen a "gun" load itself, take itself off safe, aim or discharge without some outside help.
FIREARMS DO NOT KILL THE PEOPLE BEHIND FIREARMS KILL!!!
It is better to keep one's mouth shut and appear ignorant than to speak and remove all doubt.
Guns kill people.
Fact: If this young man had not had access to a gun -- all of the people would still be alive.
By Diane's logic, drunks
By Diane's logic, drunks don't kill people, their cars do.
we need more car control,
we need more car control, then :)
It will come out that this
It will come out that this kid was on psychotropic meds for depression. They "all" are ... it was a gun that stopped him.
to Diane Gordon. lay a gun
to Diane Gordon.
lay a gun on the table and dont touch it and see if it kills someone. exactly. it cant. there has to be a person that pulls the trigger of that gun for it to kill someone. most likely someone wacked out on anti-depressants
Question
Where is this kids father?
that bastard
that mother f'ing bastard killin people for that
Robbie
I only knew Robbie for a short time while he went to my high school, but I never thought he was the kind of guy that could do something like this. Lonely and troubled yes, but a murderer, no. So sad.
i also went to school with
i also went to school with robbie for 2 years before he dropped out. He was troubled because of his childhood. sh*t look at what he went through in his life. he could make people laugh when he wanted to. i agree with this person!
Result
This is the result from bullies and bad childhood. Look at the pic, he was picked on alot in school I bet and didn't have friends. That's what the problem was with the other shootings.
Lonewolves
Cause you know, everyone who doesn't have friends is a shooter. The word for this category is "loner". this is what i am, what i may be for the rest of my life. The other shootings...? No. The problem is that no one knows how to keep their mouths shut. They did what they did cause they got tired of everyone's Shit. I don't blame them for their shooting spree's.
I have an anger problem and no friends. Do you think i'll be a shooter?
the feelings are deeper than you or anyone else could lay eyes on. you don't bother to get help cause most people are out for a buck and stab you in the back while doing so.
Any who....Go back to sleep, sheep.
All you are good for is your eyes.
I'm glad he's dead.
I'm glad he's dead.
wtf dude!
How dare you say such a thing! I know this guy just committed a freaking murder suicide, but honestly can you just think how incredibly hypocritical you being when you say ”im glad he is dead” that rite makes you just as mad as him! That being said he was probly just a disturbed depressed young man who needed to find himself and to him finding himself meant he had to lose his life, and if he was to do that then he wanted to be known for this instead of just being another lost case.
Most suicidal children are rarely mentioned aside from among there friends and half of there family if they get lucky you know (quoting blink 182-“adams song”) ”another six months ill be unknown,” Robert didn’t want to be unknown he wanted “to go out in a bang” in his own words but who would had guess to take it so literally .quite frankly I am not justifying what he did was rite but I do have to admire that he would actually do something this drastic. BUT PRAISING HIS DEATH WILL NOT BRING BACK THOES 8 PEOPLE DIPSHIT!

An answer
Guns are here to stay, the genie is long out of the bottle. The real question is, what is driving America into it's self destructive state?
Ultimately, I believe the very foundation of the US social construct has begun to show it's cracks. The resulting stress on youth in the pursuit of 'Made in America' happiness is too great. The social underdogs and psychotic who don't know how to deal will do so however they can, as has just been demonstrated. This is now a trend we will see much more of until the natural attrition of the political and religious right gains momentum over the next century.
Gun control, Murder, & Accountability
The only thing gun control does is keep good people from owning firearms. Most criminals that obtain firearms get them illegally. Also, if you read other articles about this shooting you'll find out "Robert", yes he does have a name, took the firearm from his father's home - a whole day before shooting. Robert is ultimately accountable for his own actions. He committed murder nine times - the ninth murder was his own - and he will be accountable to God for his actions. Don't believe in God? Well then this event and all the rest of the evil in the world shouldn't matter to you.
God is just your way of sleeping better at night.
God or not bad things happen. My opinion is that too many people use God as an excuse to write off all the bad things that people do. God or not, bad things happen; believing in God will not stop them. And a person that believes in God is not necessarily any less or more likely to do something psychotic than a non believer. I am so sick of people pulling God into these kind of situations. The kid snapped. Blame God, the Devil, society, or the moon. What ever makes it easier for you to sleep at night.
Or instead of writing it off, and putting blame somewhere, why not try to reach out to people? There are people everywhere on the verge of snapping, much like this fellow. Some you can tell; others you can't. If everyone turned off their televisions from time to time in order to connect with one another, instead of a flashing light, there might be a chance that fewer of these kind of incidents would happen. All it takes is a little caring, a more "Christian attitude" if you will.
Get it right
Seriously...
First, this source needs to read up and get the story straight.
He wasnt living at home, but he also wasnt living in a group home. He didnt hand his 'mother' a note, he left a note behind and called the person he was staying with, told her where it was, and hung up.
And really, are you going to pay the taxes to allow your city to hire enough police to patrol every mall, store, etc. To pat down every person as they enter...
The problem with the United

is that it's so easy for anyone
to get hold of guns. What's wrong
with your politicians? When are they
going to understand that they need
to change the laws!
the problem with united
i fully agree with you.. it is way to easy for any one to get a gun in the staes.. there is a gun store on evey corner it seems..along with a liquer store..( but heck you can buy the booze in the corner mart) if it was harder to access the guns then it would be harder to shoot people..i am in now way saying tht it will stop completly but if there was not a way to buy the gun so easily then the temptation of a easyer way out will not be there....and i do not agree that it is distubing people that kill people..it is also very stupid people that are on a power trip and then there are the people that just do not care... i know that there is crime and violince (sorry for the spelling) in the world but why make it so easy for the criminals to do so...if there were no gun shop on evey corner... the buying of guns would go down.. if there was no booze stor on evey corner..the amount of drunks will go down..it will never go away but if you make the access harder you will definitly see a difference..but het thats just one oersons opinion
wtf?
yeah... in reply to Healths comment, Just cause u dont belive in god doesn't mean you dont care about good and evil in the world wtf?
I have some friends that dont belive in god and they do care...
so stfu and stop being so ignorant.
Guns are not the problem
Given that boxcutters and planes were used to cause 9/11, we must outlaw and regulate boxcutters and airplanes as well, as they are very dangerous.
No, we go after the terrorists.
Likewise, in this case, a gun and a very disturbed person.
Go after the disturbed people and the source of their disturbance, often social / family breakdown as well as drugs.
The means to the end should never be the focus of our efforts, but rather, responsibility for actions rests with the people initiating the actions.

Will We Sleep Through Another Wake Up Call ?
First of all let me send my condolences to the friends and families of the people killed, injured or otherwise affected by this tragedy - including the friends and family of Robert Hawkins.
Mr Hawkins was clearly a disturbed and very distressed person. He needed psychiatric help. Had a psychiatrist, psychologist or counselor picked up on the danger he represented to himself or others, he would have been confined to a secure hospital. In any case, the hope would be that with appropriate treatment and support this man's emotional turmoil might have been relieved enough to stop him from being a threat.
Last week we say another - in the end much less violent - drama - closer to my home in Massachusetts when a psychologically troubled man took hostages at a Hillary Clinton campaign office in New Hampshire and threatened to detonate a bomb (which turned out to be only road flares). This man claimed his actions were sparked by his wish to draw attention to his inability to afford psychiatric care for longstanding substance abuse and psychological problems.
In no way should what I have written be taken as a plea to excuse these men for the crimes they have committed or for the harm and terror they have caused. But it seems to me that as a country we need to look at the very high percentage of people in our prisons who suffer from mental illness and are not receiving adequate (if any) treatment. To the extent their illness contributed to the crimes they committed, both they and their victims are paying a horrific price for the woeful unavailability of high quality, free (or low cost) mental health care. And this says nothing of the misery mental illness causes to law abiding people who suffer with untreated or under treated mental illness. These conditions cause suffering not only to the people who have them but to their families - especially their children. Sometimes the cost of our failure as a society to even try to look after the wellbeing of each other confronts us in ways to awful to ignore, as it did yesterday in Omahau. Will we try to hear the lesson this time? Or push it away as too difficult, too much like socialism, etc?
Peace
David

GUNS ARE THE PROBLEM!
with out guns you can't shoot a person, regarless if you are insane or not. if you take the toy from the boy, the boy doesnt hurt any one with the toy!
crazy people these days
crazy people these days
The day when the guns
The day when the guns themselves can be at blame, is the day we invent guns that can somehow make decisions for themselves & go on shooting rampages by themselves. Put blame where it is deserving...the disturbed people behind the guns.
I do agree that bullying is a huge issue in school. I myself was always the shy girl in the corner & too embarassed to talk to the other kids. Of course, that made me a huge target for A LOT of bullying. That bullying is very psychologically scarring, even years later. I still feel sad when I think about it. So that said, bullying is a huge problem, but is not entirely to blame. There are plenty of bullied children that go on to have productive lives as adults (such as myself).
CRAZY PEOPLE!!
If guns were illegal, people will still kill using other methods such as knives, swords, bombs and many many other ways. Use COMMON SENSE that it's not gun's fault, it is people's stupid brains fault.
By the way, I don't believe in god because I have been dead for an hour and life is just a joke. You are alive to experience everything and when you die, you use all of your knowledges, experiences and visuals to make your "imaginary world" so awesome. When you die, DPT from your brain kicks in. If you don't know anything or have experienced DPT trip then start reading so you have nothing to be afraid of about death.
We are all to blame...
The truth is...nobody knows what the little spark was that made him say to himself..."Oh I think i will get a gun...drive to the mall...kill as many people as i can and then kill myself." Its, obvious that this kid was messed up...and for more than while. But the thing is, everything is getting so fucked lately, nobody cares or even notices the fact that kids like this are going nuts. By the time anyone cares to even say "oh maybe that kid needs some help," or "maybe i should ask him if he is ok," he has already going on a rampage. Same with the whole Va Tech shooting. It’s all the values of Americans today...we are so obsessed with our own opinions, getting our money...getting our way all the time, that we forget what is true. What is really important? There is so much pressure on kids today to be successful and get ahead...when one falls behind they feel like they have no hope. Some of them like Robbie.. begin to hate everyone who has passed him up in society. Let me ask all of you something...What good is money when there is nothing left to buy? Stop worrying about materials and possessions and about your money...start worrying about the real shit. I know that we are lost in this age. But there is always hope.

We are all to blame
Thank you. I wish more people would take the time to care. You're right. Maybe if someone would have cared when Robert was younger maybe this wouldnt have happened. His drug addiction wasnt handled well if he felt he was a burden to his friends and family. To feel pain that deep to do what he did. I just hope we all wake up from this and take the time to take care of those close by. If someone truly cared about him, those who died would still be here, including Robert.
Take care
i would kill him if he were
i would kill him if he were alive now...that loser ass piece of shit

The answer to all of this
The answer to all of this madness is very simple. Our emotions come from within. They are not created by other people or other things. They are chosen by ourselves. Once this is accepted, then, lashing out at others becomes nonsensical.
It is my belief that everyone, including Robert Hawkins, was not born believing that "happiness" (conversely unhappiness) comes from outside of ourselves. We are continuously receiving the message that other people or other things make us happy or sad.
I do not profess that overcoming these beliefs is easy. It requires difficult continual practice. However, the result would be the elimination of all hurtful actions towards others.
By believing that we choose who were are, we empower ourselves to become who we want to be.
robert
I think that there should be one or two years of school given to each of us at a very young age teaching us to be ok with ourselves. A great deal of families want there child to be like the other children. Many parents are so competive with other parents about their childs accomplishments. There is competiveness from the time of birth on. I remember when my son was a infant and other parents wanting to know if my boy was walking, talking, off the bottle yet, and on and on. Some of them I could tell would be upset if their child was not one of the first to do so. I felt that way myself at times. As I am getting older I have realized that it did not matter. Why do we as parents do that? What I am trying to get across is we as parents need to stop the competiveness. Robert had a sister that did exceptionaly well. Add in a divorce and step parents I can see how he probley got lost. He never learned how to be alright with himself. I am not saying that he was failed by his parents but rather he wasfailed when he did not learn how to be ok with Robert. More of these situations will come about until people learn how be to content with themselves. Life is to fast not to be.
Stupid
This was one stupid idiot punk, that wanted to cry because he couldn't take it. Now he murdered innocent people and changed families lives forever. Then of all things he punked out by killing himself, because he thinks the world will remember him. His body should be taken out in a field and let the buzzards have there way.

Be the change you wish to see...
None of you really knew the poor kid, neither did I. I think it is pathetic what many of you are saying about him, like you could possibly know what was going on in his mind. Some of you saying you are happy he is dead, others saying you would have killed him yourself if he was alive. Those statements make you NO better than him. He took innocent lives that can never be replaced, including his own. It was a very sad day in Omaha, that none of us will forget, but you cannot judge someone when you have no idea what happened in his life that made a poor young man do something so horrific.
Take a look at what happened and try to help the children of our future to make better choices. Robert was teaching us something with his acts. He was teaching us to help children like him so we can in the future stop these things from happening. This is not a joke.
There is no need for a comment if you have no plans in helping change the future.
