Pacers' Jamaal Tinsley Escapes Sunday Morning Shooting Unhurt
Indiana Pacers' guard Jamaal Tinsley and several companions were the targets of a shooting early Sunday morning, that resulted in the wounding of one person. Tinsley escaped the incident unharmed, but did not practice with the team on Sunday.
This incident marks the third time since last year that Tinsley has been involved in a disturbance stemming from nights on the town.
Team President Larry Bird said, "I really didn't know what to think about it. I was just hoping everybody was all right. You feel bad any time your players are in some situations, you feel bad for everything that happened. I just feel bad for the organization. We'll get through this, but it's tough right now."
The Pacers' equipment manager, Joey Qatato, was struck in both elbows as he was sitting in Tinsley's Rolls Royce. Qatato, 48, was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
Indianapolis police said that they were grateful the incident occurred at the time of the day that it did, as the streets were pretty bare. "If it happened during rush hour, God knows what would have happened," said police.
Coach Jim O'Brien said that Tinsley made an error in judgment, and hopes that the narrow escape will help him make better decisions in the future.:
"Jamaal put himself in a situation that was very, very dangerous," he said. "These guys have every right to go to a nightclub. I have a right, everybody here can be out till 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning. It was not a good decision and that's basically it. I'm sure he knows that and I'm sure there will be a lifestyle change for him. But, to the best of our knowledge, he was a victim."
Tinsley and his group arrived at a club in three cars owned by him - a Mercedes, Rolls Royce, and a Dodge Charger. Reportedly, a group of people had gathered around the Rolls Royce, and were giving Tinsley a hard time about his cars and earnings.
After leaving the club, Tinsley and his group realized that they were being followed. They spotted two vehichles tailing them, and then headed towards the Conrad Hotel, where the shooting commenced.
The Rolls Royce was subsequently peppered with bullets, and the Charger was also found to have taken five bullets. Two of the vehicles in Tinsley's group reported took off after the shooters, and Tinsley's brother, James, fired back at the attackers. Police said that James Tinsley does have a gun permit.
Police were called to the hotel around 3:40am. Tinsley appeared to be the only Pacer player in the group, which also included his brother and a few friends. Police continue to investigate, and are looking for the two vehicles. No additional arrests have been made.
One person in Tinsley's entourage, Antoine Toon, was arrested for an outstanding warrant in Georgia for dealing a controlled substance.
"This is something we can't just put right behind us and walk away from. It's something we'll have to discuss. I don't know how long it'll take and we'll continue to talk about it. We have to make a change, there's no question about it," said Bird.
Tinsley is scheduled to meet with Bird and O'Brien on Monday morning.

I think everybody is just picking on the Pacers. They cant even go out and have a good time because crazy people like to start trouble. You dont see any of the Colts players getting picked on do you. It is all because of that one incident. That just started it all.
