Lakota Indians Announce Formal Separation from the United States
On Wednesday, the Lakota Indians declared their independence form the United States of America. The tribe of such legendary warriors including Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, delivered a message to the U.S. State Department earlier this week, announcing that they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties signed with the U.S. Government.
The Native American tribe has territory spanning five midwestern states, and have said that the treaties have been repeatedly violated by the U.S. Government. In all, the Lakota tribe feels that a total of 33 treaties have been broken.
Roughly half of the Lakota nation is within the state of South Dakota, while the rest resides in portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming.
Representatives from the newly self-proclaimed Lakota country said that they plan to issue their own passports and driving licenses. Residents living there would free of taxes as long as they renounce their U.S. citizenship.
In recent years, the Lakota Indians have suffered through some rough times. Teen suicides are 150% above the U.S. average, unemployment is extremely high, and the infant mortality rate is five times higher than the U.S. average.

I am so happy to hear of the new Lakota nation. I wish them luck. Although thier borders should be definitly established and they should recieve No benifits from the U S goverment since they are no longer citizens. A valid passport to travel to this country with visa and standard immigration procedures should be followed.

Just exactly how do they plan to impliment this seperation anyway. Now that the concept and union of the United States is rooted firmly in most Americans how do they plan on relocating people that do not want to denounce their citizenship and will not pay their land tax? I think that this is the very making of civil unrest at its very worst....Here comes another civil war....maybe this time all of us will actually unite under one ideal.

True, they lost against a better armed invader. It's also true that they were attacked as infamously as the Japanese attacked us, in a cowardly fashion, being killed man, woman and infant. All they ever did was to defend their own land and we handled it poorly by breaking treaty after treaty and swarming over their villages committing genocide.
If they can at least gain more autonomy and break out of their grinding poverty because of this move, it will be more than worthwhile. I don't see them ever actually becoming a separate nation within the U.S. boundaries. maybe they can make the government give back the gold take from the Black Hills illegally by ignoring the treaty. We have lots of it in Fort Knox that just sits there and serves no purpose whatever. We went off the gold standard long ago. Time to give it back. I like the idea anyway.

Historically, though, the Black Hills were only Lakota land for a little under a century, and they obtained it via warfare with other tribes...then lost it via warfare with the U.S. government, so there's a certain symmetry there. The violation of the treaties by the U.S. gov't isn't much in question, though.
It's unclear whether this was just a group of activists trying to make a point, or an act of the actual elected Sioux representatives. My bet is this is just a symbolic act with little real consequence one way or another.

If they were able to boot the wasicu off the land that is theirs by treaty, they would have more than enough high demand natural resources (uranium, water rights) to maintain their nation. I just don't know exactly how they think they'll boot whitey off their land after all this time. My guess this is connected to the ongoing water disputes in that area.

Keep this is mind, as long as the Lakota Tribe regains Tilte or Absolute ownership of their land, Then the rest will not be that difficult. Land, and its true owner is sovereign and can not be taxed or controlled. The reason the American people pay taxes is because we dont own land, we only get Deed etc...to property and real estate. Go back and look up the old original definition of real estate and you will find it means, proprty rented by a foreign entity.
