8 Movies to See in the Summer of '08

Next weekend will start the summer movie season. The 2008 lineup looks strong, and we have selected the cream of the crop. Here are the movies we believe will be worth a trip, high gas prices or not, to the movie theater this summer.

May 2nd: "Iron Man"

Another comic legend gets to show if he has what it takes to make it on the big screen this summer. "Iron Man" has been a comic book icon for over 4 decades for Marvel Comics. The film edition stars Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark. Stark has been captured by terrorists in Afghanistan. Needless to say, the terrorists are messing with the wrong guy. Here is the preview of the film hitting theaters next weekend:

May 9th: "Speed Racer"

On May 9th we get to see a classic cartoon get the silver screen treatment by the guys that brought us "The Matrix". The latest from the Wachowski brothers features notable actors such as Emile Hirsch, John Goodman, and Susan Sarandon. If you have children expect to hear a lot more about the film as Nintendo DS, Wii and PlayStation 2 are releasing a new video game adaption of the film. Looks fun for lovers of the 60's cartoon series and a whole new generation of fans.

May 22nd: "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"

Harrison Ford returns in a familiar role as Indiana Jones. "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" has the makings of the biggest summer movie by far, and is set to wow the crowd at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring alongside Ford in the Steven Spielberg film are Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett. The bad news for fans of Indy is the fact that Sean Connery turned down the chance to reprise his role as Dr. Henry Jones in this film. Nevertheless, just being able to hear the famous theme music is enough to get you primed to see the latest installment.

June 13th: "The Incredible Hulk"

Movie buffs who haven't been paying attention to the development of this film may have raised their eyebrows with this selection. After a flop with the first 'Hulk', execs completely changed the 2003 version of the film that was met with widespread scorn. Edward Norton plays the Hulk looking to make the green monster as big as he was in the 1970's when Lou Ferrigno starred in the television series. Here is the trailer:

June 20th: "Get Smart"

This is the one I may be the most excited about. Based on the popular 60's sitcom, Steve Carell will show if he has what it takes to play "Agent 86", who originally made famous by Don Adams. Hopefully, for fans of the original show, the answer is yes and hopefully sequels will come of one of Mel Brooks' best creations.

July 18th: "The Dark Knight"

"The Dark Knight" will be met with a somber tone due to the death of actor Heath Ledger. Ledger, by all accounts, performs a stunning rendition as Batman's villain The Joker in what will be his second last screen appearance. Christian Bale stars as Batman and you will also be able to catch a glimpse of screen legend Michael Caine. This, alongside the Indiana Jones movie, will be the one of the biggest hits of the summer.

July 25th: "The X-Files: I Want to Believe"

The "X-Files" returns after a 10 year hiatus on the silver screen. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return to their familiar roles in the television spinoff. The plot of the film has been kept under tight wraps leaving the legions of fans to guess what is store for the return of the popular franchise. Here is the glimpse that we have been able to seen so far.

August 15th: "Tropic Thunder"

Another "Frat Pack" movie comes to theaters in mid August. The movie was supposed to once again pair Owen Wilson alongside Ben Stiller before his suicide attempt. Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr (as a black man), Nick Nolte, and Matthew McConaughey will play large roles as well as Tom Cruise as a fat bald man in a cameo apparence.
