Vatican Splendors Exhibition Opens in Cleveland May 31

Cleveland will once again play host to some of the Vatican's most treasured and prized items, some of which have never before been on public view. Opening May 31 at the Western Reserve Historical Society is the "Vatican Treasures" exhibit, which features some of the earliest known depictions of Jesus amongst a collection of Vatican art and artifacts..

One of the largest Vatican collections to ever tour North America, the exhibit features works by Michaelangelo, Bernini, Giotto, Guercino, and many others, as well as the venerated relics of Saint Peter and items from the election of Pope Benedict XVI. Some of the 200 artifacts included in the exhibit date back to as early as the 3rd century.

The exhibit is dived into four thematic sections, illustrating the evolution of the Church and the papacy beginning with Saint Peter, leading up to modern times through the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI. The exhibit places a special emphasis on founding 500 years ago of Renaissance Saint Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Papal Swiss Guard.

Objects included in the exhibit are presented in both galleries, as well as recreated environments that will enhance understanding of their historical and artistic significance. It is a multi-sensory experience that you won't soon forget.

The exhibit opens May 31 at the Western Reserve Historical Society, which is located at 10825 East Blvd. in University Circle. It will run through September 7, 2008.

General admission prices are as follows: Adults - $20, Children (6-12) - $14, Seniors (62+) - $18, and WRHS Members - $16. Special discounts are available for groups, as well as for Parishes that make arrangements. Guided audio tours are also available for an additional small fee. More information about the exhibit can be found at wrhs.org and vaticansplendors.com.

The last time that Cleveland had the opportunity to host some of the Vatican's most prized possessions was in 1998 when the "Vatican Treasures" exhibit took up residence at the Cleveland Museum of Art for the months of February to April. Don't miss your opportunity this time - it might not come around again!

Vatican Splendors

Just wanted to say how wonderful, delightful, informative and any other superlative that you can think of, this exhibit is! Cleveland is SO fortunate to have the opportunity to have such an unique exhibition. My Mother and I came from Pittsburgh to see the exhibit. We stayed overnight and continued to enjoy the other delightful "goodies" that Cleveland has. I wish the Pittsurgh cultural powers that be would bring these types of exhibits to Pittsburgh or else Cleveland will just have to move closer! - Marjorie Marotta-Malkin
