Nintendo's Wii Fit Breaks a Real Sweat

You probably have heard about Nintendo's latest sensation, the Wii Fit. The game was promoted to blend both video games along with fitness. Odds are that you may have scoffed and thought this was just another video game that will turn you into a coach potato. How wrong you were if you thought that. The Nintendo Wii game can, and will, give you one heck of workout if you are willing to go along with the challenging games.
There are four categories of games to play with the Wii Fit. Balance games will help you learn how to shift your body and make you better aware of the slight shifts you make. Yoga games will provide you the basics in Yoga and will challenge you by contorting your body with challenging poses. Strength training will give you a basic outline of things like pushups and situps that will help build and tone your muscles. Aerobic workouts such as step aerobics and boxing will get your heart race pumping and make you wonder how much you can sweat in your own living room.
The balance games are the closest thing to traditional video games in the whole set. Ski slalom and snowboarding are fun for any ages, and are sure to be a party hit. Heading incoming soccer balls will be sure to give you a chuckle, but watch out for flying shoes and pandas that will make you lose points.
The Yoga games are a true delight and will make you wonder how you a) can get such a good workout by using just your body weight and b) how you are able to contort your body when you first think that the moves are impossible. Poses include the tree pose, the warrior stance, the half moon, the downward facing dog and others.
Strength training includes things like lunges, torso twists, push ups, and jack knifes. These workouts will probably give you a flashback to gym class and also workout muscles that have been idle for some time if you haven't been lifting weights recently. You will find it enjoyable but don't overdo it because you will be sore for a few days after conquering some of the challenges.
The aerobic workouts fail to challenge at first but when you unlock advance step and boxing that is when the fun begins. Advance step is a perfect game for people who like things like Jazzercize while boxing is probably the best workout in the whole game and works both your arms and legs.
Some things that I would like to see added to this game is something like celebrity personal trainers. Wouldn't it be funny to have Arnold Schwarzenegger lead you through strength training or Laila Ali give you pointers while hitting a punching bag? If I am able to think of additions like that, I am sure the folks at Nintendo are well on their way to making it a reality.
Not all the games mentioned here are available right away. More challenging workouts are unlocked as you go through the game - a wise move by Nintendo, probably to avoid players injuring themselves and also frustrating them so much that they give up on the game.
So, you ask, is Nintendo's Wii Fit worth it? I have worked out with it for about a week and it has kept me working out for about an hour each day. It is not a chore in the slightest, and while you are sitting at your desk at work you will be daydreaming of the exercises you want to conquer when you punch the clock and head home after a hard day at work.
