Kiwi Parents Lose Custody After Naming Daughter 'Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii'
A New Zealand court ruled that some names are just so weird that they are tantamount to child abuse. As a result of the ruling, one couple lost custody of their daughter after they named her "Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii."
A lawyer for Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii said that the 9-year-old girl was extremely embarrassed by her name, and had not revealed it to her friends. Instead, she was known as "K".
The New Zealand Herald reported:
"The lawyer said the girl feared being mocked and teased, and had a better insight about the situation than her parents, who appeared not to have given any thought to implications of giving their child such a name."
Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii was thus placed "under the guardianship of the court" pending her parents selection of a new name. Judge Rob Murfitt said, "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap."
The ruling was made back in February, and was only released this week. In it Judge Murfitt also revealed some other highly unusual names that Kiwis have chosen for their offspring. Those include O.crnia, Violence, Midnight Chardonnay, Number 16 Bus Shelter, and some twins named Benson and Hedges. All these names were permitted, but the judge also revealed some other names that New Zealanders have been blocked from using: Fish and Chips (for twins), Stallion, Keenan Got Lucky, Fat Boy, Yeah Detroit, Adolf Hitler, 4Real, Satan, Twisty Poi, and Sex Fruit.
