Music Review: Bad News, Ligeia

Ligeia have returned with a new disc to brutalize you with Bad News. Bad News kicks off with its title track starting with feedback and distorted guitar before pummeling us with their post-hardcore melodic vocals and bashing double bass groove. It’s not that irritating of a cut as it has a good deal of sharp tones and harshness in its body. “Johnny Cash” kept the aggressive nature, but enveloped itself in a harmonic front of growls, rants and singing backed by wicked chords and blast beats showing us that they’re definitely true metalcore. It was also nice when they added the soft bridge creating an alluring presence amongst the chaos.

“Hot Mess” is more like a screamo-based anthem with the combination of screaming and tenor notes blazing up the album with something extreme; yet heart-wrenching. “One Night Stand” is similar to “Hot Mess” as it’s less metallic and more like a hard rock track with the bluesy rhythms, hard-charging riffs and smooth lyrics spilling out love and lust as it’s so old school trash metal and hard alternative. “Teenage Wasteland” returned to what opened up this release as it’s quite evil in its composition filled with relentless crunching guitars, machine-gun like drum breaks and a ghoulish vocal speaking volumes about decadence.

Ligea breaks away from the thrashing with a soft ballad on “Heroin Diaries” as its teary and stripped-down giving us something eclectic and strong. “Thanks For Nothing” perhaps is the most assertive track on here as it thrusts itself at you like a hungry lion ready to kill. “Hoodrat” ends this just like it began with tons of ferocity and biting wit accented nicely with chants and powerful licks. Ligeia has something great here with Bad News and it’s like bringing the streets back to heavy music.
