Mariel Zagunis Wins First US Gold Medal of the 2008 Olympic Games
Mariel Zagunis has the special honor of being the first American athlete to win a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Ranked fifth in the world and seeded sixth at the Olympics, she easily rolled over top-seeded Sada Jacobson in women's saber on Saturday at the Fencing Hall in Beijing.
The 15-8 victory over her US teammate marked Zagunis' second consecutive Olympic gold medal. Zagunis, who trains with the Oregon Fencing Alliance, is from Beaverton, Oregon.
Sada Jacobson of Dunwoody, Georgia brought home a silver medal for Team USA. Becca Ward of Portland, Oregon completed the US sweep of women's saber, snagging a Bronze medal.
When Zagunis won the gold in women's saber in 2004, she was the first American in a century to win a fencing gold medal. Judging by this year's results, however, the trends have changed. The US fencing team is also favored to win the team competition in women's saber.
The US is currently the only country with three medals in this year's Olympics.
