Dallas Attorney Admits to Paying Edwards' Mistress
After months of denials, John Edwards confessed to having an affair with former staffer Rielle Hunter on Friday in an interview with ABC News. While he admitted to the affair, he denied being the father of her baby and denied that he had given her hush money to keep the affair secret. He did however say that he hadn't had a paternity test, and that some of his friends and supporters may have given her financial assistance without his knowledge. Well it seems that last part might be partially true, with Dallas attorney Fred Baron coming forth and admitting to having given Hunter cash to move away from Chapel Hill, N.C.
Baron, chairman of Edward's campaign finance committee in 2004 and 2008, said that he gave Hunter the money independently and without Edwards' knowledge. While the National Enquirer had alleged she was receiving upwards of $15,000 per month from an unknown Edwards supporter, Baron would not confirm any specific dollar amount. He said he did it to help Hunter escape the press who were hounding her in NC.
So let's get this straight:
John Edwards has an affair with a staff member and lies about it to the American public. He gets caught by the National Enquirer, photographed even, and still lies about it. He says he never loved Hunter, and that the affair happened while his wife's cancer was in remission. He says he couldn't be the father because of the timing of the baby's birth, and denies giving money to her to keep her quiet. Two former staff and good friends of Edwards take the fall - Baron says he paid off Hunter, and Andrew Young says he's the actual father of the baby.
Something is a little fishy here.
Even fishier is the mainstream media's failure to cover the story, which broke last fall. While MSM might shudder at the thought of uttering the words "the National Enquirer reports", responsible journalists, given the tips and curious scenarios, would have investigated further instead of sweeping it under the rug.
Considering that Baron admited to having paid Hunter yesterday, only a week after the National Enquirer said an Edwards supporter was paying Hunter $15K per month, it's likely that another juicy Enquirer exposé is just around the corner.
