Edwards' Mistress Will Not Have a Paternity Test, Inaccuracies in Edwards' Claims Arise
John Edwards' mistress, Rielle Hunter, says that she will not have a paternity test on her daughter - not now, not ever. Her lawyer, Robert Gordon, issued a statement on Saturday:
"Rielle is a private individual. She is not running for public office. She wishes to maintain her privacy and her daughter's privacy. Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future."
The National Enquirer, who broke the story, has it on good authority that Rielle has delusional thoughts that this will all work out and that she and John Edwards will eventually be together, which may be why she's still covering for him. Edwards likely knew this, and that may be why we saw him make the offer of having a DNA test done - because he knew she wouldn't do it.
On Friday, while the world was waiting for the start of the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the fabulous opening ceremony, John Edwards had an interview which was aired on ABC in which he confessed to his affair with former staffer Rielle Hunter. He said, however, the there's no way he could be the father of the child based on the timing of the birth and when their affair ended.
However, Edwards' claims have now been called into question and the timetable of events as explained by Edwards may not be entirely correct. Let's take a look at the inaccuracies:
EDWARDS' CLAIM:
He claims that the affair "took place for a short period in 2006" and "it ended then."THE REALITY? :
Sources say that the couple met in late 2005 or early 2006 at the bar in the Regency Hotel on Park Avenue, and the Huffington Post had reported the relationship lasted about a year.Hunter also traveled with Edwards beginning in July 2006 for more than four months, and continued to receive payments for her work for him until April 2007. During his interview with Bob Woodruff at ABC, Edwards was asked if he had hired Hunter before the affair began. He responded, "That is correct." Unfortunately for him, records show that she was first paid by his PAC for for short doccumentaries she made of him in July 2006, and new emails Hunter sent to a friend indicate that the affair was well under way by April - a whole three months earlier.
Even more curiously, Hunter incorporated her company, Midline Groove Productions, just five days before the PAC cut her first check. She also had no prior video or production experience.
EDWARDS' CLAIM:
Edwards said he told his wife, Elizabeth, about the affair in 2006. He told Woodruff, "This was in 2006. She was mad. She was angry. I think 'furious' would be a good way to describe it."THE REALITY? :
On December 29, 2006, Edwards was photographed sitting on a campaign plane alongside his mistress. A day earlier, he held a press conference in New Orleans and declared his intention to make a second run for the presidency. If Elizabeth knew of the affair in 2006, why would he still be hanging out with Hunter?!EDWARDS' CLAIM:
He claims that he personally broke the news of his affair to his wife of 31 years, and that she did not hear about it publicly. "I, in 2006, told Elizabeth about the mistake, asked her for her forgiveness, asked God for his forgiveness," said Edwards.THE REALITY? :
There are several reports that the flirty rapport between Edwards and Hunter in the Webisodes she filmed had raised some eyebrowns amongst many in the candidates inner circle. In one he had even gone shoe shopping with her.According to the Huffington Post, Elizabeth called up a staff working on the films at one point asking for Hunter's phone number.
Little of what Edwards said in the interview matches up with other reports. One can't help but wonder just how much of a cover-up sham this all is.
