Edwards' Wife Stuck with Him for the Sake of the Kids
After Elizabeth Edwards found out that her husband had cheated on her with a member of his campaign staff, Rielle Hunter, she decided to stick by his side because she is dying and worried about their two young children, said her closest friend.
Hargrave McElroy, Elizabeth's closest friend, said "It's just tragic. That's all I can say about it."
In an interview with People magazine, McElroy says that John Edwards didn't confess about the affair until after he officially announced his presidential run in December 2006. This left Elizabeth with a decision to make: stay or go? Because of her cancer, Elizabeth didn't have the luxury of deciding to seperate or work through it over the years. She decided to stick with him, for the sake of the children, of course.
Elizabeth had hoped that in sticking by his site, both in life and on the campaign trail, she could help to ensure that her youngest children still had an untarnished view of their father. Emma Claire, 10, and Jack, 8, will not have that luxury anymore following the National Enquirer investigations and Edwards' subsequent television interview and admission of guilt.
Adding further to Elizabeth's anguish are reports that continue to emerge which say that Edwards is still lying, and that the affair never ended. According to the latest from the Enquirer, Edwards didn't confess until a campaign staffer walked in on him and Hunter and word got back to his wife, who thus confronted him. A friend of Rielle Hunter also said that they broke up numerous times, but got back together.
The National Enquirer has said that they restarted their affair in 2007, and were still together when Hunter got pregnant that May. She's now got a baby, and the father remains a mystery.
A source close to Hunter also accuses Edwards and his mistress of staging the paternity test offer. Edwards offered to take the paternity test one week, and Hunter refused to allow it the next. She is reportedly protecting Edwards because she still believes they may have a future together.
Hunter's sister, Roxanne Andrews, says that the affair hasn't ended, and that Hunter and Edwards remain in touch. She has also made very strong suggestions that Edwards is the true father of her baby.
