Ohio Congressional Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones Dead at Age 58

Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the congressional representative for Ohio's 11th district passed away Wednesday after a brain hemorrhage. She was hospitalized Tuesday evening and remained unconscious early Wednesday morning at Huron Hospital in the Cleveland area.

Tubbs Jones' car veered off the road Tuesday evening, where police found her unconscious behind the wheel.

A spokesman for the hospital had initially said that family members requested that no other information on Tubbs Jones be released. It was announced later in the day, however, that her condition declined throughout the day and that she had passed away in the evening.

Tubbs Jones suffered the hemorrhage while driving her car in Cleveland Heights on Tuesday evening. She lost control of the car, and crossed lanes of traffic before coming to a stop. A police officer found her unconscious behind the wheel.

Tubbs Jones, 58, was the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress when she was elected in 1998. She is currently serving in her fifth term in Congress, where she is the chairwoman of the House Ethics Committee.

Tubbs Jones was also one of Hillary Clinton's biggest supporters during the Democratic primaries. She was set to be a superdelegate at the Democratic national Convention in Denver next week. She shifted her support to Barack Obama after Clinton dropped out of the race.

Before running for political office, Tubbs Jones had served as a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas judge and prosecutor.

Tubbs Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Mervyn L. Jones, Sr, who died in 2003. She is survived by her son, Mervyn L. Jones, Jr.
