A new dress code enacted by the Monroe school district in Ohio has cheerleaders and parents hopping mad. The school district is requiring all skirts worn in class to be no shorter than 3 inches above the knees, which rules out the cheerleaders' slit-sided miniskirts. The girls traditionally wear their uniforms to school on game days.

According to the dress code, cheerleaders will violate the policy unless they wear leggings or long shorts under the skirts. One mother said that they spent more than $400 on the uniform, and that her daughter worked hard to earn the right to wear her uniform at school.

As it stands now, the girls are permitted to wear the uniforms in pep rallies and at games, but not in school.

Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli said that officials plan to meet with parents, but have no plans to change the policy.

The Monroe school district has about 1,000 students enrolled, and is located about 25 miles north of Cincinnati. One nearby school district, Lakota, has a similar dress code but makes an exception for cheerleaders.
