Music Review: The Great I Am, Agraceful

Another spectrum into the ever-growing Christian hardcore realm as Agraceful unleashes to us, The Great I Am. The Great I Am’s opening track is “A Prophecy: In Reverie" as it's severely aggressive with the combination of screaming and singing vocals, melodic guitar solos and double bass grooves that are truly representative of both metalcore and screamo; this isn’t a bad start to this disc. “Stygiophobia” gets into the metallic chaos further into depth as it’s a faster cut and has more destructive elements and less musical structure, but is the perfect song to bang your head and mosh. “The Things We Believe” is a throat-ripper of a track as it shoots straight ahead at you with the guttural growls, heavy shredding and ear-tingling repetitive beats.

“In Oceans” follows through just like the rest of the material on here as it’s definitely contrasting in its character with the cruel screams mixed in sharply with the harmonic bellowings backed by a rhythmic blend of riffs and fills creating a nice visual. “The Servants Are Tongues Of Fire, Pt. 2” is unequivocately pure hardcore metal as a madman shrieks violently with fervent bashings of the rhythm section giving us a macabre vision into Armageddon. “Revelations” is similar and monotonous, but has tons of emotion and inner power from the lyrics to the music making it soulful in its presence.

“Armageddon, Pt. 3” cements itself as a heartfelt anthem that is bone-shattering good with its chugging; yet chunky bass licks, tongue-lashing vocals and dark chords. Agraceful ends The Great I Am with its sludgy and quiveringly wrenching title track as it’s slow and progressive, slightly tinging on emocore. This group as first was thought to be nothing more than just a typical post-hardcore outfit, but Agraceful surprised us tenfold.
