Elizabeth Edwards Speaks Out About Her Husband's Affair
Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, talked about her husband's affair in her first interview since the scandal was made public. In the interview, she describes the situation as "an ongoing process of finding your feet again."
The interview comes more than a month after her husband admitted to repeatedly lying about having an affair in 2006 with a former staff member, Rielle Hunter. Elizabeth had been quiet about the affair, discussing it only in a very brief statement last month while pleading for her privacy.
Edwards, 59, told the Detroit Free Press: "There's a lot of adjustment to make. When you mention trust, that's probably the most difficult hurdle."
She spoke to the Detroit newspaper ahead of a planned visit to Detroit next month in which she will talk about life's setbacks, including the loss of her teenage son in a car accident, and her 2004 cancer diagnosis.
Edwards, who is currently being treated for a terminal form of breast cancer, said that she wants her children to have an image of their father as "an advocate for poverty, not for this current picture of him to be the only one they carry with them, as young people and as adults."
"I have to prepare for the possibility if I die before they are grown," she said, of helping them "function without an involved, engaged and admiring parent. So I need to create the picture for them that I want them to have," she continued.
John Edwards has cancelled all public events until after the election, stating that he doesn't want to be a distraction to the Democratic party's ticket.
