Mets Pitcher Involved in Hit & Run, Killing Two Women

New York Mets relief pitcher Ambiorix Burgos allegedly struck and killed two women in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday evening in his home country of the Dominican Republic. Burgos, 24, was driving a vehicle that struck two women near the town of Nagua on the island's north coast.

The Dominican paper El Nacional reported that Josefina Minaya Martinez, 38, and Angely Faña, 29, were killed in the crash.

Witnesses told police that Burgos was driving the vehicle, and later turned himself for questioning. He was also wanted for a gun possession charge.

Burgos, who missed the entire 2008 season with an elbow injury, came to the Mets in a trade with the Kansas City Royals. He also plays for the Eastern Toros in the Dominican winter league.

This is not Burgos first brush-in with the law recently. Just last month he was arrested for allegedly manhandling his girlfriend in a Queens hotel, where he is said to have punched, bit, and slapped the unidentified woman on September 8.
